Something about the photos stopped people mid-scroll — and not everyone could agree on what, exactly, they were looking at.

Meghan Markle, 44, stepped out on Thursday, 19 March 2026, for the Alliance for Children's Rights 34th Annual Champions for Children gala at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, California, alongside her best friend of nearly two decades, Kelly McKee Zajfen.

Meghan arrived in a sleek, strapless navy Ralph Lauren column gown that skimmed her figure elegantly to the floor, accessorised with gold hoop earrings and a chunky gold cuff bracelet.

Kelly, glowing in her third trimester, wore a fitted long-sleeve black turtleneck maternity dress that hugged her bump, her brunette waves styled in loose curls around her shoulders.

The two friends looked genuinely delighted to be together — and the cameras caught every moment of it.

From the moment they posed on the step-and-repeat, Meghan was tactile and warm, cradling Kelly's baby bump with both hands, pressing close, and tilting her head toward her friend with a wide, beaming smile.

The pair laughed, embraced fully, and leaned into one another across multiple poses — the kind of easy, unselfconscious affection that speaks to a long, deep friendship.

But for many watching online, the images landed differently.

"The general public reveal that dry humping a pregnant lady on a step and repeat is awkward and inappropriate," one commenter declared bluntly. Another puzzled, "This behavior is so bizarre. It looks like THEY are a couple and cooing over THEIR baby. Weird!"

The criticism didn't stop there. "Everytime you see Meghan she's acting weird and she grabs and holds on to everyone all the time. It's not a one off — she's always hyper and grabbing at everyone," one observer charged.

Another remarked pointedly, "Yeah, Meghan is clutching at her bump like it's her baby or some weird [expletive] like that. Very strange."

Some questioned whether Kelly herself was entirely at ease. "That's creepy placing hands on another woman's pregnant belly — Kelly looked uncomfortable," one person insisted. "This is indeed the craziest ever... Is she convenient at all with this??" another marvelled.

The sharpest responses were reserved for Meghan's overall demeanour. "She has never looked so desperate. I could barely see her dress because she was crawling up her 'friend's' pregnant body. It's uncomfortable to look at," one critic wrote scathingly.

Another piled on, "She's a big mess. She looks desperate and insecure. Huge fake grin. Hamming it up for the paps. Grabbing onto that poor woman. Holding the baby bump as if it's her own. Practically on top of her."

"But come on — her behaviour was really strange," one commenter concluded. "All that clutching and grabbing of her friend's baby bump! I mean even the friend was pulling away at one stage... weird."

Kelly herself, however, painted an entirely different picture of the evening — and of the woman beside her.

The gala was no ordinary night out. The evening drew a constellation of figures from Hollywood and the legal world, all united behind the Alliance's mission to transform the futures of vulnerable young people and children navigating the foster care system.

At the centre of it all was Kelly, whose own philanthropic roots run deep.

Over a decade ago, she co-founded the Alliance of Moms to channel direct support to the Alliance for Children's Rights — a nonprofit dedicated to securing legal protections, educational opportunities, stable housing, and wraparound care for at-risk children, with a special commitment to young parents within the foster system.

Receiving her award, Kelly was visibly moved, telling HELLO! that being recognised by an organisation doing such quietly transformative work for foster families and young parents was an honour.

"A lot of times things happen quietly, and it feels really good to shine a light on our foster youth tonight, and our pregnant and parenting community. I'm honoured," she said.

Speaking to the outlet about Meghan, Kelly credited her friend as a quiet force for good. "She's an incredible role model in living a life of service," Kelly said warmly.

"She does not necessarily do everything loudly; she does things quietly, so it's really beautiful to watch. I think we feed off of each other because we love to give back, and we love to support and be of service to others."

"She not only shows up for my family, but it's a real privilege to be able to watch her mother too," Kelly added, referencing Meghan's children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.

The depth of that friendship runs far beyond red carpets and galas.

The pair first met nearly 20 years ago through Meghan's ex-husband Trevor Engelson. Through marriage, loss — including the devastating death of Kelly's nine-year-old son George in 2022 — and every chapter in between, the friendship has held.

"She's been a part of my journey with the loss of my son, and she hasn't left my side since," Kelly said. "It's a beautiful friendship, and I'm really grateful to have her."
