What Happened Onstage in St. Paul

Lionel Richie, 77, was rushed to a hospital after falling ill onstage on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, in the middle of his concert at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The moment came during "Dancing on the Ceiling" — a normally high-energy spot in the setlist. Richie told the crowd he felt "dizzy" and "strange," and even took a seat on one of the stage platforms while still trying to sing.

Ever the showman, he joked with the audience that the best thing to do in his situation was to "sit your ass down."

His saxophonist, Dino Soldo, eventually stepped up to tell the crowd that Lionel wasn't feeling well and would be unable to continue the show.

The Ambulance Ride

Sources connected to Richie said paramedics met him backstage, and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital — though it was described as a precautionary measure.

The incident came on the opening night of his joint tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, a run scheduled to hit 26 venues. Next up on the calendar was supposed to be Chicago on Friday night, followed by Columbus.

How Lionel Addressed It

Then came the update fans had been waiting for. In a post shared by Live Nation Chicago, Richie's team confirmed that under advisement by doctors to rest and return to full health, he had postponed his next two shows — Friday, June 26 in Chicago, and Saturday, June 27 in Columbus, OH.

He and Earth, Wind & Fire would return to the stage on Tuesday, June 30 in Pittsburgh, PA.

And then the line that caught fans' attention: Lionel was "heartbroken" to postpone the two shows and "cannot wait to be back performing for his fans."

That single word — heartbroken — set off a wave of reaction. For a performer known for joyful, sing-along arena nights, it landed harder than the usual boilerplate apology.

Rescheduled dates, the statement added, would be announced soon. The United Center in Chicago echoed the news with its own show update on Facebook, noting the postponement was made "Under advisement by doctors."

What Fans Had to Say

The comments under the announcement filled up fast — some sweet, some pointed, and a few that didn't hold back.

"To one of the nicest guys in the world hope you get to feeling better🙌," wrote one fan.

Another commenter, still thinking about the abruptly cut St. Paul show, asked: "What about Saint Paul Mn ? An hour concert was not enough….get well soon."

One ticket holder pleaded for a return date. "Will he come back to St. Paul to finish the second half of his show? I waited my whole life to see him!! Would love more than anything if he came back to do so. Most importantly, praying he is okay! 🙏🏻 @lionelrichie," she wrote.

Not everyone was sympathetic. "He's Faking It," one skeptic posted bluntly. Another claimed, "He can't sing anymore anyway. Voice is gone. This is all a PR stunt."

But plenty pushed back in defense of veteran artists still touring into their late 70s and 80s. As one fan put it, "they are the real ones."

As we previously reported, fans who gathered in Minnesota expecting a night of classic hits instead witnessed a moment many never imagined seeing from Lionel Richie.

Richie was in the middle of his June 25 performance at Grand Casino Arena when he suddenly appeared unable to continue as usual. During "Dancing on the Ceiling," typically one of the most energetic numbers in his setlist, the singer sat down on a platform onstage while continuing to perform.

Addressing the audience, Richie joked about the situation while acknowledging that it was unlike anything he had experienced before. "Now, what I have learned about my years of being in the business. When you are feeling busy, sit your [expletive] down. Ha ha ha ha ha ha! And when you are feeling strange about yourself, sit your [expletive] down."

He continued, "Now, I want you to know that's the first time in the history of 'dancing on the ceiling' I've done it sitting down. That's a bad sign. That's a bad sign, y'all."

Music critic Jon Bream, who was at the concert, later noted in a social media post that Richie, who was feeling "dizzy" and "strange," performed "Dancing on the Ceiling" sitting down during opening night at Grand Casino Arena.

Fans soon learned that the concert would not continue. Richie's saxophonist, Dino Soldo, then stepped in with an announcement. "Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well. One person wrote, "He was smart, he knew something was wrong." Another person stated, "I can't watch. He's one of my favorites." A third commenter speculated, "I would not be surprised if he was overall fatigued and dehydrated, and possibly coming down with a sudden illness. He's 77 years old and it touring takes a toll on an artist."

Richie Once Thought He Might Lose His Voice Forever

The recent scare also reminded some fans of another frightening chapter in Richie's life. During the 1990s, he developed a mysterious illness that affected his vocal cords and underwent four separate surgeries before doctors determined that diet-induced acid reflux was causing the problem.

In an interview with People, the singer later recalled that period as being "about as close as you ever would've come to a nervous breakdown" because he worried he might never sing again. "You don't want anybody fooling around down there. This is your identity," Richie said, adding, "I never really thought that it would end."

For now, fans appear relieved that Richie was hospitalized as a precaution and encouraged to rest, while many wait for confirmation of when the Sing A Song All Night Long Tour will resume.
