Florida Man Faces Animal Cruelty Charges After Deputies Respond to His Home — Bodycam Footage Released

A frightened kitten was carried out of a Florida home as deputies questioned a father about what had happened behind closed doors. The animal survived, but investigators say the property concealed evidence of an even darker history.

David Charette Jr., 48, was arrested after Lee County deputies responded to a Pine Manor residence near Fort Myers on August 5, 2026. By the following day, authorities were publicly describing allegations involving three young cats, a teenage girl, and a backyard search that recovered only part of what investigators expected to find.

What Did Deputies Encounter at the Home?

The investigation began with a report that a man was attempting to drown and strike Luna, a two-month-old kitten. Deputies entered the residence and found the small black cat still alive.

In bodycam footage released by the Lee County Sheriff's Office, a man identified in reports as Charette tried to explain why the kitten had been wet and crying.

He insisted the animal was healthy and said he had only been cleaning her. "The cat's in perfectly healthy condition," he told deputies.

He continued, "I happened to give the cat a bath because it soils itself in a cage. It's covered in [expletive], and I have to give it a bath and it cries, and she doesn't like that."

The video shows someone handing the black kitten to a deputy, who carefully places her inside a carrier. She is then removed from the home, separating Luna from the man accused of hurting her.

The footage later shows Charette being placed inside a law enforcement vehicle. His explanation about bathing the kitten stood in sharp contrast to the account deputies said they received from witnesses.

According to WINK News, Charette's daughter reported that her father had struck Luna with a bottle of nail polish and put her inside a clothes dryer before his arrest.

Luna was taken to a local animal hospital for treatment. Authorities later said she was recovering, offering one desperately needed piece of good news in a case that was about to become far more disturbing.

Who Was the Alleged Target of the Cruelty?

Deputies initially arrived to investigate an animal in immediate danger. Witness statements reportedly revealed that the violence carried another purpose, one centered on Charette's teenage daughter.

Witnesses told investigators that Charette would abuse and kill the family's kittens in front of the girl whenever he believed she had misbehaved. The animals were allegedly being used as a way to punish and frighten his own child.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno reacted bluntly to that allegation. "A daughter says that when she acts up or when she's in trouble, her father kills her kittens. This is sickening to me," he told WINK.

No further information was provided about the teenager's condition or living arrangements following the arrest. Her reported account, however, gave investigators a reason to examine what had happened to the family's previous kittens.

When Did Investigators Learn About the Other Animals?

During the investigation, detectives learned that two other kittens had allegedly been killed within the previous year. Neither animal was old enough to defend itself, and the methods described by authorities were especially severe.

Investigators said a one-month-old kitten died in June 2026 following alleged mistreatment involving bleach. A three-month-old kitten also allegedly died in a separate incident involving a blow dryer, though authorities did not provide the date.

Both accounts reportedly came to light while detectives examined the allegation involving Luna. The surviving kitten's rescue therefore opened a wider inquiry into what the household's animals and Charette's daughter may already have endured.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office said the two dead kittens had been buried behind the home. Deputies searched the property, expecting to find both of them. Only one kitten's remains were recovered. Authorities did not disclose why the other could not be located or whether another search was planned.

What Charge Does the Father Face?

Charette was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty involving excessive pain or death. Lee County Sheriff's Office arrest records listed his bond at $100,000, according to People.

The publicly described charge followed the rescue of Luna and the information detectives gathered about the two kittens that had died. The sheriff's office announced the arrest on August 6, one day after the recorded encounter at the home.

Its account identified Pine Manor as the community where deputies responded. The case remained framed as an aggravated animal cruelty matter in the available reports. No additional charges connected to the teenage daughter were announced in the information released at that time.

The bodycam footage did not show the alleged violence described by his daughter, but it captured the crucial moment deputies took possession of the kitten and removed her from the residence.

Charette's guilt or innocence will ultimately be determined through the legal process. He remains in custody as of August 6, according to the News-Press, and his arraignment is scheduled for September 8.
