He spent much of his adult life navigating an uncomfortable collision between fame, fitness, and body image. Before-and-after photos documenting his transformation are waiting at the end of the article.

This actor rose to fame in the late 2000s as Seth in the 2007 teen comedy "Superbad," where audiences were introduced to a chubby, baby-faced young actor with brown curls, a quick wit, and a performance that helped make him one of the movie's breakout stars.

Yet as his career grew beyond the film that made him famous, his appearance remained part of the public conversation, marking the beginning of years of scrutiny that he would eventually address openly.

His first major physical transformation became apparent in 2011, when the actor lost about 40 pounds after changing his diet and committing himself to exercise.

Speaking to "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" that year, he described his new approach as "physically running instead of emotionally running," while revealing that advice from a friend had also led him to begin doing push-ups every day. The Hollywood star shared:

"I think I started at, like, ten and then I just, like, worked my way up and now I do 100 every day."

It was not the end of the fluctuations in his weight, however, as several years later, he deliberately gained weight for his role in the 2016 film "War Dogs."

Then, when he was ready to get back into shape, he turned to someone he knew from another physically demanding Hollywood production: his "21 Jump Street" co-star Channing Tatum.

During an August 2016 appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," the actor recalled asking Tatum a question whose answer, in hindsight, seemed obvious.

"I called Channing Tatum, and said, 'Hey, if I ate less and go to a trainer, will I get in better shape?'" he recalled. Tatum's response was characteristically blunt: "Yes, you dumb [expletive], of course you will. It's the simplest thing in the entire world."

The "Superbad" star followed the advice and began working with a nutritionist, who had him document what he ate and send a food log by email at the end of each day.

As his appearance changed again, the fuller-faced young actor audiences remembered from "Superbad" gradually gave way to a noticeably slimmer figure.

But beneath the humor was a subject the actor had discussed much more seriously before.

Yet exercise eventually became about more than simply losing weight. Brazilian jiu-jitsu became one of his interests, and by May 2026, he was still practicing the martial art despite joking that the physical demands were becoming difficult to ignore.

"I love Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Except my body is begging me to not love it," he said during an appearance on the "SmartLess" podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett.

The Hollywood star also joked that his wife regularly reminded him that he was a comedian rather than a professional athlete.

Then, when Bateman steered the conversation toward how he might fare in an actual fight, the actor playfully claimed he could take on all three hosts.

The "Superbad" actor also addressed something that had followed him for nearly two decades: people who still thought of him primarily as the "fat guy from Superbad."

He joked that he would "annihilate" anyone who confronted him physically on that basis and invited doubters to test the theory, although he conceded that someone considerably larger than him might have the advantage.

But beneath the humor was a subject the actor had discussed much more seriously before. In a since-deleted Instagram post from 2021, he reflected on the effect that years of jokes and public discussion surrounding his body had on insecurities he had carried since childhood.

For some, the transformation has been impressive while also making him nearly unrecognizable from his early years.

The actor explained that there had been a time when he was uncomfortable even removing his shirt — even around people close to him.

But he added that, by his late 30s, he had reached a place where he could accept himself rather than allowing unsolicited attention to dictate how he felt about his body.

His message was also directed toward younger people experiencing similar insecurities, encouraging them not to let embarrassment about their bodies prevent them from enjoying their lives.

Still, years of changing his habits, working on his fitness, and speaking about self-acceptance have not ended the public commentary surrounding his appearance.

As photos of his increasingly lean physique have circulated, some netizens have continued comparing the man he is today with the fuller-figured comedy star audiences first came to know.

For some, the transformation has been impressive while also making him nearly unrecognizable from his early years.

One person said, "That's an incredible transformation he did and it is better for health indeed. But he looks like a completely different man now, might have even lost something he had when he was fat, certain charisma."

Others were considerably more direct about preferring his former appearance. One netizen commented, "He looks so much better heavier tho [sic]🔥," while another typed, "I like the fat guy from Superbad way better."

Not every reaction centered on nostalgia for his heavier frame, though. As his interest in martial arts became part of the conversation, another person joked, "He's like that kid in school who just started karate… Pretty soon it'll only be used in self-defense."

Meanwhile, someone else focused simply on the results of his transformation, sharing, "Jonah is looking chiseled. Good for him."

The actor behind the transformation is Jonah Hill, whose changing body has remained a subject of public fascination since "Superbad" helped turn him into a household name.

Nearly two decades after audiences first met the curly-haired young comedian as Seth, his journey has encompassed major weight loss and his own efforts to move beyond years of outside commentary about his appearance.

The before-and-after photos below trace that transformation, showing Hill during the early years that shaped the public's image of him and the dramatically slimmer appearance that continues to generate conversation today.
