Singer who adopted troubled sister's child breaks down when judge speaks to him
It was a tear-jerking audition for the singer.
Marcio Donaldson is an aspiring singer who appeared on season 15 of the talent-hunt show, American Idol.
Faith Tap reported that the 28-year-old singer was eliminated from the popular show halfway through the season in 2016. He decided to return to the show and get it right this time around.
Donaldson who has had a difficult upbringing found strength in his music. Describing the neighborhood he grew up in, he said there was a lot of shooting, a lot of substance abuse, and a lot of people who did not complete 13 years of their life.
Though his mother tried a lot, children services ended up placing him and his sister in the foster care system. Here he found refuge in his music.
Life changed dramatically when his sister got pregnant. Since she was dealing with her drug addiction, Donaldson’s sister was deemed unable to care for her baby.
Authorities then presented him with a life-changing decision. There were two options in front of him – either take his nephew, Rashaad, into his own care or let him enter the foster care system.
It was a no-brainer for Donaldson as letting him go could mean that Rashaad potentially lives a stressful and unbalanced life.
He chose the former and adopted his own nephew. He did not want Rashaad to be shuffled from foster home to foster home like he was as a child.
In the tear-jerking audition, Donaldson is seen entering the judges’ room with his son, Rashaad, in his arms. Judge Luke Bryan is more than eager to hold him while his father takes his place to sing.
He gives an amazing rendition of Labrinth’s Jealous but is overcome with emotions as he finishes the song. The judges, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, console him and give the audience a never-seen-before clip on American Idol audition.
