'Good Morning America' to expand to 3 hours following cancelation of 'The Chew'
It is a “bittersweet” moment for the network as it expands one show and cancels another award-winning one.
Disney ABC Press reported that Good Morning America will now be a three-hour program, while the The Chew will be taken off the air.
The Emmy Award-winning show will expand to three hours with the new hour being aired at 1 p.m. EDT. However, the network is now letting go of another popular show to make time for the change.
Seven seasons and 1454 episodes later, multiple Emmy nominated and two Emmy Awards winner, The Chew, will end production. All-new episodes will continue to air as planned until September this year.
Co-Chairman of Disney Media Networks and President of Disney/ABC Television, Ben Sherwood said that it was the right decision for the business, though it was “bittersweet.”

“Over the past six years ‘Good Morning America’ has solidified its place as America’s No. 1 morning show. We believe there is great opportunity for viewers and advertisers in expanding to a third hour.”

He also praised The Chew for delighting audiences with an innovative concept over the years. He thanked the hosts, Chefs Michael Symon and Carla Hall, and entertaining expert Clinton Kelly, and the entire team for the run.
The Chew premiered in 2011 and is a talk/food hybrid show. The hosts expressed sadness and gratitude for their time together on the show on the episode aired on May 24, 2018.
During the opening segment, Kelly said that the mood was a little sad as they were all going to miss the show. Symon added that he had fun on the show because of the fans who made it special for him. Hall said they had more fun than what was visible on the screen.
According to Disney ABC Press, GMA has been the most-watched morning newscast for six consecutive years. The new hour will feature ‘even more news, pop culture, compelling interviews and the program’s signature, epic live events.’
The network will announce other details about the show, including the title and anchors, in the coming months.
