Heartbreaking moment NFL player scores touchdown and falls to his knees days after losing baby
After a touchdown, Marquise Goodwin fell to his knees and broke into tears.
Oblivious to the shocked spectators, he and his wife had just lost their unborn baby.
The emotional moment transpired in November 2017.
The 49ers wide receiver showed up to play despite his sorrow over losing his baby. He scored an epic touchdown - an 83-yard catch - and helped his team beat the New York Giants 31-21.
After the touchdown, he fell to his knees, made a cross sign, and blew a kiss towards the sky. He then collapsed in tears, as shown in a video posted by Inspiring.ntd.
His teammates crowded around him to celebrate. But they soon realized that their teammate was grieving. They comforted him. It took a little while before Goodwin lifted his head off the ground
His teammates helped him to his feet. Goodwin opened up to his team after the game.
He told them that his wife gave birth to a premature baby a few hours before the game. The baby did not survive after Goodwin's wife suffered pregnancy complications.
On his Instagram, Goodwin expressed his gratitude to the people who supported him and his wife amidst their grief.
He shared a photo of the premature baby's tiny arm holding on to a finger, presumably of his wife's.
'Unfortunately, we lost our baby boy due to some complications and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4 am,' he wrote.
'Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan. The pain (physically, mentally and emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable,' he added.
Goodwin also asked his followers to continue to pray for his family.
His wife, Morgan, also shared a photo on Instagram to pay tribute to their deceased baby. The photo shows the baby's hand holding a white heart-shaped pillow.
'This whole week has taken an emotional toll on my husband and I, struggling to keep our healthy baby safe in my womb. However, God had other plans for us,' a part of her caption read.
