US Weekly: John Travolta talks about 'honest' marriage just a few years after gay affair scandal

John Travolta and Kelly Preston have been married a long time by Hollywood standards and their marriage appears to be rock solid on the surface.

In a recent exclusive interview given to US Weekly July 18, 2018, Travolta and Preston used words like "honest" and "fun" to describe their 27-year partnership.

The couple says their secret to a long and happy union has been spending quality time together, dancing, and being with their two children - their eldest son Jett died in 2009 at 16.

The Church of Scientology has also played a key role in keeping their family together, they say. But it wasn't that long ago that John Travolta was hit with a scandal when a pilot claimed they had a 6-year same-sex affair in the eighties.

According to Preston, 55:

“I think that we were just right together, that we picked the right people and keeping it honest and communicating and checking in with each other. A relationship doesn’t just happen. You have to work at it. You’ve got to keep it fun and that’s what we do.”

In a story that started a mini-war of words reported by the

, professional pilot Doug Gotterba, 63, claimed that he had a fun-filled gay affair with the famous

actor that started in the 80's.

Gotterba claims:

"He would ask me to join him in his suite and we’d spend the nights together. It was our little secret.”

In his version of the story, Doug says he first met John during an interview for a pilot job in 1981, February. He claims that by September, they were already in an affair.

Doug claims that on those days, they flew to Monterey together and had a fantastic dinner where they had merlot wine in Carmel.

He says he could feel that John started having feelings for him, so when he invited him for a massage, he immediately agreed. The massage led to sex. According to Gotterba:

“John was gentle but very passionate. The next day he told me with a big smile on his face, ‘I really enjoyed last night.’”

Doug said that John was a romantic and would take him to get-away places like Kenya, Hawaii, and Amsterdam. He says that their affair was a secret and Travolta would invite women along as a blind, but ask to spend the night with him.

Doug claims that the relationship between Brooke Shields and John occurred on direct advice from him. He says John never loved her, but would only pretend to in public places.

He says his relationship with John ended in 1986 after the star started becoming insecure. He would apparently search for evidence of Doug cheating and sometimes would give him the silent treatment because he was not available at a moment’s notice.

Doug says he last met John in 1992 after he had married Kelly Preston. Even then, Doug claims, Travolta confided in him that he still preferred men over women.

Gotterba’s story follows on the heels of two other claims by people who say the Pulp Fiction star groped them during massages. They filed charges that they later dropped. The first person withdrew his charges after John proved that on the stated date, he was in fact in New York and not in Beverly Hills, as claimed.

Doug's lawsuit against Travolta was also dismissed by a Judge on the pilot's instruction "with prejudice" meaning he may never file another case for the same claim again.
