Marie Osmond revealed her thoughts about her daughter’s sexuality after reports had emerged that her Mormon faith proved to be an obstacle.

Marie Osmond opened up in a telephonic interview with LA radio station KOST 103.5 after being asked her thoughts on her daughter coming out. The 58-year-old singer implicitly denied that she was ashamed of her daughter Jessica’s sexuality.

The mother-of-eight further rejected the claims that her Mormon faith was proving to be an obstacle in accepting that her daughter was a lesbian.

“I think everybody should have the right to share homes and finances with somebody that they care about. You know on those types of things I’m very supportive. When it comes to marriage I think that civil rights need to be for all.”

Osmond said that she loved her daughter, and her sexuality did not come in the way of their relationship at all. Her daughter is a "smart" woman and knows her beliefs.

"When you start mixing religion into that and beliefs, you know, I do believe in the Bible. My daughter understands my beliefs. And, and, uh, you know, God said to be married and be productive with your children and, and, you know, replenish the earth or whatever. She understands those things. My daughter is sharp. And we have a great relationship and I think she would tell you that."

In the interview, Osmond said her daughter was a “magnificent woman” and stated that she believes in equal rights for gays and lesbians under the law.

“You know on those types of things I’m very supportive. When it comes to marriage...I think that civil rights need to be for all.”

Osmond’s public support is significant as she is the highest profile Mormon to have come out in support of marriage equality.

In May 2009, The Globe carried a report, now deleted, stating that Osmond was so ‘heartsick’ after discovering the sexual orientation of her daughter and that she refused to even ‘publicly acknowledge it.’ After Ellen posted a picture of it in their report.

A few days after the publication of the report, Osmond appeared on KOST 103.5 and set the record straight, saying that it was not a sensitive topic and that she believed in equal rights for all. Which answers the question once and for all.
