The 2018 "Black Girls Rock!" event that took ce at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's Prudential Hall last August 26 honored singer Janet Jackson, supermodel Naomi Campbell, screenwriter/producer/actress Lena Waithe, dancer/choreographer Judith Jamison, "MeToo" founder Tarana Burke, and of course, Mary J. Blige herself. Hosting the awards show was Queen Latifah, and it will be aired on BET this September 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

The women of color will be honored their own respective awards, specifically the following: Jackson received the Rock Star Award, Blige accepted the Star Power Award, Campbell was honored with the Black Girl Magic Award, Waithe got the Shot Caller Award, Jamison accepted the Living Legend Award, and Burke got the Community Change Agent Award.

"Black Girls Rock!" was founded by former model and DJ Beverly Bond, and is an annual award show that aims to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of influential black females, similar to that of the Essence Festival. The event is not considered as a competitive award, as the honorees are notified in advance. The first time the awards show took place was back in 2006, and BET has been televising the show since 2010.

Along with the presentation of awards to the different awardees, the show included performances by Yolanda Adams, Tamia, H.E.R., Victory Boyd and Alvin Ailey Dance Theater's Jacqueline Green.

As previously reported, the awards night also had a special tribute to the late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, who passed away after a long battle with pancreatic cancer last August 16.

It has been quite the year for Mary J Blige, who had also previously received two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song for her work in "Mudbound". Although she did not win these awards, she made history for being the first person to get Oscar nominations in the same year for those two categories.
