His career with NBC started in 1978 when he was employed at WKYC-TV in Cleveland. He was promoted to the network's flagship outlet, WNBC-TV in the place where he grew up after five years in Cleveland.

He then became the regular substitute for forecaster Joe Witte on the NBC News program "NBC News at Sunrise" from 1983 to 1996, and from 1990 to 1995, filled in for Willard Scott, Bryant Gumbel and Matt Lauer on the "Today Show."

Rocker, who had been vocal in his opposition to journalist Megyn Kelly's attitude, also became the host of a weekend talk show on CNBC called "The Al Roker Show."

In 2016, Rocker and his wife Roberts published the non-fiction book "Been There, Done That: Family Wisdom for Modern Times."

The morning television legend was previously married to WNBC producer Alice Bell. In 1995, he tied the knot with Roberts.

The couple first met when Roberts joined NBC in 1990 as a reporter. They shared three children - two daughters, Courtney and Leila, and one son, Nicholas Albert.
