US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested rapper 21 Savage, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, for overstaying his visa.

As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, the arrest, labeled as a “targeted operation,” took place on early February 3, in metro Atlanta. The news shocked many people as the rapper has claimed to be an American (Atlanta) citizen throughout his career.

21 Savage’s fans thought that he was born and raised in Atlanta because of his thick Georgian accent and the lyrics of his songs, which address his tough upbringing in the city.

DIGGING INTO THE ARREST

However, his birth certificate revealed that he was born in London, UK. His parents are British citizens, too, and it was his mother who took him to the US at the age of 12. ICE pointed out that his “whole public persona is false.”

On February 3, Atlanta Police arrested rapper Young Nudy, who was in a car with 21 Savage. When the agents ran both rappers’ dates of birth through their system, they learned about 21 Savage’s true past and turned him over to ICE.

Soon later, he was accused of lying about his past. According to Daily Mail, 21 Savage’s birth certificate states that he was born on October 22, 1992, at Newham Hospital, located in east London. His parents are Heather Joseph and Kevin Emmons.

GETTING TO THE US

In 2005, Heather legally took her son to the US, but his visa expired in July 2006, revealed ICE spokesperson Bryan Cox. The man added that the rapper “overstayed his visa,” which is a violation of federal immigration law.

Apart from that, 21 Savage was convicted on felony drug charges in October 2014 in Fulton County, Georgia. At the moment, ICE is waiting for the outcome of that case before a federal immigration judge decides what to do with him. One of the possible outcomes of this case is deportation.

The rapper’s attorney, Dina LaPolt, set clear that she was doing her best to get him out of custody and to “clear up any misunderstanding. She added that 21 Savage was a role model to young people in Atlanta and the country and “is actively working in the community leading programs to help underprivileged youths in financial literacy.”

21 SAVAGE’S LIFE AND CAREER

One of the most striking aspects about him is how he adopted his stage name. When he was 21, he was shot six times in a failed assassination attempt. Thankfully, he embarked in a music career in 2017 and became a popular rapper soon later.

21 Savage is best-known for his feature on the song "Rockstar" by Post Malone, which recently got nominated for Record of the Year and Best Rap Performance at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

The Atlanta-based rapper also collaborated with Offset and Metro Boomin, which they released in October 2017. He also has two solo albums called "Issa Album" in 2017 and "I Am > I Was" which he published in December 2018.
