Former first daughters support Malia Obama amid recent backlash while Ivanka stays silent
On Monday, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama’s oldest daughter, Malia Obama, received some backlash for underage drinking. Pictures of her at a Miami getaway with friends were published by the media.
She was seen on a poolside sun lounger holding a bottle of rosé. Previous first daughters have since come out to support her right to be a normal citizen.
Malia Obama, 20, was targeted by “The Daily Mail” at the beginning of this week by publishing a "secret" Facebook account picture she’d shared. The post described President Donald Trump as “evil.”
However, the main story revealed that while in Miami Obama was seen drinking rosé. The Whispering Angel rosé costs $80 on the resort’s wine list.
Trump supporters condemned her actions as “privileged and #illegal.” Conservative talk show host, Andrew Wilkow tweeted that the former first daughter was “Living like the 1%? Drinking underage? Let’s see the #democrats and media scream about ‘privilege’ here …”
However, Obama received overwhelming support from previous first daughters. On the same day that the story came out, Chelsea Clinton took to Twitter to berate those who were attacking her fellow first daughter.
She wrote, “Malia Obama is a private citizen. No part of her life should be anyone’s clickbait.” Jenna Bush Hager agreed with Clinton with her own tweet.
She noted:
“Hesitant to add anything to such a nothing-story, but agree with @ChelseaClinton whole heartedly (sic). Please don’t click on silly stories and let’s give Malia privacy.”
The current first daughter, Ivanka Trump, chose not to get involved. Other people who supported Obama were conservative commentator Ben Shapiro who wrote, “OMG Malia Obama is a human with political opinions and also enjoys wine.”
Screenwriter Randi Mayem Singer commented, “Wait, Malia Obama hates the dude who fueled an 8-year campaign of racist lies claiming her dad wasn’t born in America? Go figure.” His comment was in reference to Trump’s birth conspiracy about the first daughter’s father, Barack Obama.
“The Daily Mail” also posted several images of the former first daughter on her vacation, labeling it as a "wild weekend away." However, the only thing “wild” about it appears to be her doing nothing but sitting on a chair and walking under an umbrella.
