2 Boys Aged 13 & 14 Are Suspects after 14-Year-Old Girl Was ‘Lured out of Her Home’ and Killed
Two teenage boys are suspects in the murder of 14-year-old Sylvia McGhee, from Canton, Ohio. The girl was found dead in an alley last Saturday; she was shot once in the back of the head. Her family is asking for justice.
Sylvia McGhee was found with a gunshot wound in the back of the head near 11th Street SW and Bieyl Court SW, not far from her mother's home, around 4 a.m. on Saturday. A passerby called paramedics, and first responders pronounced the girl dead at 5:01 a.m. according to police records.
Captain Dave Davis, from the Canton Police Department, revealed that two teens are now being investigated about the case. One of the boys, a 13-year-old, was held in custody and charged with obstruction of official business for lying to police.
“He lied to officers. He gave false information during his interview," Davis said.
The other boy, 14, was not held in custody, but according to Davis, both teens could face serious charges for McGhee’s death.
“At this point, we have given all of our information to the Stark County Prosecutor's Office, and they are contemplating charges at this time," Davis explained.
Sylvia’s family and friends are devastated by her tragic death and asking for justice to be served.
“Why would somebody do this to her? What did she do that was so bad? I couldn't understand. I didn't believe it at first," Ashley Milini, Sylvia’s aunt, told News 5 Cleveland.
Sylvia’s grandmother, Sylvia Milini, believes the girl was set-up by people she called friends to go out of her house at such an odd hour. “She didn't have a chance,” the grieving grandmother said.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the girl’s funeral, and in the description, Ashley Milini offered more information on the case, writing:
“My poor baby was murdered in cold blood. Her life was taken senselessly and carelessly. She was set up by people she considered her friends. She was only 14 years old. She was lured out of her home by some of her friends into the alley behind her house, and murdered, right behind her own home.”
Sylvia was an 8th grader in the Connections program at Compton Learning Center, and according to Tabitha McCarthy, who was her friend, Sylvia’s dream was to become a professional basketball player.
Police are still reviewing cell phones for more evidence. The case is on-going.
Although the number of juvenile delinquency cases has dropped since the late 1990s, according to a 2014 report from the National Center for Juvenile Justice, there are still several teens being arrested for crimes that often leave police and the community speechless.
Last month, an 11-year-old girl whose name has been withheld by the police was charged with fatally abusing a one-year-old boy who died while he was in her care.

The boy, Paxon Davis was left in the care of the unnamed 11-year-old babysitter while his mother took some time out to do a little shopping. But when the mother returned, she found her son seriously injured and immediately called emergency services.
Paxon was rushed to the hospital but died after four days in intensive care.
The babysitter initially told the mother that the boy had fallen while playing, but after careful examination by Prince George's County Police department, it was determined that the injuries the boy sustained were caused by physical abuse from another person.

The 11-year-old babysitter confessed that she assaulted the young child and has since been charged with first-degree child abuse and has been remanded in a juvenile facility.
