People Magazine reports that the police in Calhoun County, Alabama has confirmed the death of six-month-old Kahlia Marie Gordon who was shot by her father, Trenton Gordon, over the weekend.

The tragic incident took place on Sunday around 1 pm and is being treated as an apparent murder-suicide.

Investigators revealed that Trenton, 23, also shot his daughter’s grandfather at a home in Ohatchee. It was after fleeing that scene with Kahlia that he shot the little girl outside the house and then turned the gun on himself.

"He cherished those kids like he would have died for those children..."

Responding deputies reportedly did their best to revive the infant before paramedics arrived, but she was far gone. Meanwhile, the grandfather is said to be recovering from the shooting.

The horrific murder-suicide was reportedly preceded by a domestic dispute with the child’s mother, Christina Gamez. Per AL.com, Trenton initially brought Kahlia with him to the house in Ohatchee where he started arguing with Christina before shooting her father in the arm.

According to WIAT, Christina had been involved in a domestic violence incident with Trenton on February 14 and filed for a protection from abuse order. Two days before the murder-suicide, on March 29, Trenton allegedly violated that order.

Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade described the incident as “sad” and “senseless” while wondering how Trenton, a registered sex offender, got to have Kahlia in the first place:

“I just hate that this happened. It’s very sad and it’s just senseless. …He might’ve got the child from another disturbance, in a jurisdiction that’s not handled by the sheriff’s office, we’re not sure how that happened yet. But he arrived with the child in possession. I believe he was trying to get the mother of the child to get in the vehicle with him.”

A friend of Trenton’s, Marla Warren, told ABC3340 that he had another kid and that the man she knew would never hurt either one of his children.

"He cherished those kids like he would have died for those children, literally," Warren said. "This whole situation just makes no sense to me whatsoever because it's so outside of his character."

Less than an hour before the tragic incident, Trenton posted a chilling message on Facebook that read in all-caps: “This will be the last day I live I love everyone that was in my life.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral expenses for little Kahlia while officials are still investigating the tragedy.
