Meghan McCain Mourns Death of Late John McCain's Beloved Dog with a Touching Post
Eight months ago former Arizona Senator John McCain passed away at age 81 from stage four brain cancer. Now, his favorite pet has followed the politician to heaven.
The senator’s daughter took to Instagram on Monday to reveal that her late father’s dog had passed away.
Meghan McCain, 34, took to social media in a heartfelt tribute post to reveal that her late father, Senator John McCain’s, Chesapeake Bay Retriever had died. The dog was named Burma.
In her post, “The View” co-host shared that the canine had originally been given to her father as a birthday present. However, the dog became more than just a pet as they saw her as a member of their family.
Alongside a photo of John smiling while Burma sat closely next to him, Meghan wrote:
“Every time I think my heart can’t be broken any further…our dog Burma was my father’s birthday present years ago and was absolutely and truly devoted to him.”
The television host continued:
“She would never leave his side, followed him around every single step when he would walk around our ranch, slept by his side every night and we always said Chesapeake Bay retrievers were the most affectionate breed of dogs.”
She concluded her post by sharing that she hoped the two were reunited in heaven:
“The love this dog gave him was equal to a family member. I love you Burma and hope you’re in heaven jumping into creeks, chasing sticks and fish with Dad.”
She then shared a series of photos from her November 2018 wedding featuring Burma in the family’s photos. In all the images, the canine was seen seated right at John’s feet.
Meghan captioned the since-deleted photos, “Burma on my wedding day.” The co-host also posted two videos, which were taken by a family friend, where the pet could be seen running into a stream to fetch a giant stick.
She wrote the clips, “Thank you for these @jhause – … forever to my dads [sic] dog Burma. You brought us all so much love and joy.” In July 2017, just three days after announcing his cancer diagnosis, the former senator was joined by Burma and Meghan for a hike in Arizona.
Meghan posted the image on Twitter and captioned it, “Amazing hike with Dad @SenJohnMcCain this morning. Thank you all for your best wishes!” A month later, John shared a video of his pet excitedly playing in a creek. The short clip was captioned, “Burma at her best!”
John’s widow, Cindy McCain also mourned the pet by writing a post on Instagram. She wrote, "To all who loved our dear Burma. She died today in a tragic accident at our beloved Hidden Valley. She [is] now frolicking with the one she loved most in heaven now."
After John passed away his family released a public statement. In part, they said: “Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. on August 25, 2018.”
