Mom Kicked out of Golden Corral Restaurant for Being Dressed 'Too Provocatively' in a Crop Top
A restaurant kicked a woman out because she was dressed “too provocatively,” but she believes she was discriminated against for being overweight.
Sueretta Emke took to Facebook to share her unfortunate experience at the Golden Corral restaurant, where she celebrated her son’s birthday.
"We are grateful the issue was brought to our attention because it represents an education opportunity and a chance to make amends with a guest we disappointed."
In the middle of their celebration, a male manager approached her and said another customer had complained that she was dressed “too provocatively.” Emke was wearing a crop top and denim shorts.
Emke was told to put on another piece of clothing or leave. She wrote in her now-viral Facebook post:
“He never would tell me exactly what I was showing too much of. When I asked … he would respond that it wasn’t his place to say.”
Emke, who was forced to leave the restaurant, suspects that it was her weight that was the main issue. She wrote:
“I have seen people in there wearing less and nothing is said to them, but I really do believe something was said to me because I’m not thin so it’s not considered sexy.”
NO INTENTION TO OFFEND ANYONE
Golden Corral issued a statement to PEOPLE offering an apology.
The statement reads:
“We strive to make all of our guests feel welcome and comfortable, but it appears we didn’t meet the mark in this situation.”
The restaurant also added:
“While we don’t offer specific guidelines on attire for our franchise locations, it is never our intention to offend anyone. We are grateful the issue was brought to our attention because it represents an education opportunity and a chance to make amends with a guest we disappointed.”
ANOTHER RESTAURANT SCENE
Emke’s experience calls to mind another incident at a restaurant in which a mother was harassed because of her crying baby.
While trying to pacify her baby, Lucy Hatani, a new mother from the U.K., overheard a young man says:
“I wish she’d shut the thing up!”
But his father intervened with a perfect response. He stood up and pointedly told his son:
“What and you think you were perfect? You were a right little sod. Now stop being a brat, go up there and apologize to her and offer to get her breakfast as she clearly has her hands full!”
It truly pays to be polite with one another, especially in a public place.
