“Good Morning America’s” co-host, Lara Spencer, has the dance community criticizing her for comments she made about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s eldest son, Prince George.

On August 26, Spencer shared with audiences the details of six-year-old Prince George’s curriculum at his school, Thomas's Battersea. The subjects he will be taking include; math, science, history, poetry, religious studies, computer programming and ballet. After mentioning ballet, Spencer broke out into a laugh with the audience, taking a pause to contain her laughter she says:

“Prince William says Prince George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you, Prince William…We’ll see how long that lasts…I mean, he might!”

“Dance Moms” Abby Lee Miller took to Instagram to respond to the comments. In the video she refuses to name Spencer because she feels that she doesn’t want to give her anymore media attention or social media followers, by naming her. Miller justifies why dance is important for young boys, explaining how it has benefited male dancers, she says:

“Saturday morning ballet lessons sure paid off, they're on Broadway, they're on world tours…they're in the new Steven Spielberg movie. I mean come on, it's 2019, I thought this stuff was over, I guess I was wrong. And I'm not usually wrong. Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that I think every child should dance.”

Suggesting that more should be done to take away the attention Spencer is getting, Miller put out the challenge to donate an entire years salary to the arts.

Also coming to Prince George’s defence, other choreographers and professional dancers have joined in to criticize Spencer. Many have taken to social media to share their opinions. Unlike Miller, they aren’t holding back on naming Spencer.

“Good Morning America” has since issued an apology for Spencer's comments. Speaking to the audience, she explains:

“The comment I made about dance was stupid and insensitive and I am deeply sorry. I have spoken with several members of the dance community over the past few days. I have listened, I have learned about the bravery it takes for a young boy to pursue a career in dance.

Some fans have responded to the apology with messages forgiving Spencer for her comments. Others see her actions as a form of bullying and think her apology is forced or scripted by the show to prevent further damage to ratings.

In addition to her on air apology, Spencer wrote a personal message on Instagram, sharing:

“My sincere apologies for an insensitive comment I made in pop news yesterday. From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT. I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions. Go climb your mountain-and love every minute of it.”

To curb any further attacks, Spencer has turned off comments on her latest post, where she issues an apology.

Despite the backlash she is facing, Spencer’s comments have incited an important conversation about dance and stereotyping what young boys and girls should be exposed to. In the same way women are fighting to be accepted in male dominated careers, Spencer's comments have given attention the plight of young men in the world of dance.
