Janet Jackson received a lot of love from family and friends when she received the Icon Award during the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. Among her well-wishers featured in her post of gratitude was her rarely-seen sister, Rebbie Jackson who still looked amazing at the ripe age of 68 at the time.

Janet made special mention of her eldest sibling in her caption, thanking her for her support that day. Younger fans of the concert star were momentarily confused, not realizing she had a much older sister.

Rebbie was one of the more private siblings among the Jacksons whose pack of men including Michael Jackson famously comprised the Jackson Five.

HER RECORDING CAREER

It’s easy to imagine the new generation not to be aware of Rebbie considering her debut album, “Centipede” was released in 1984 when none of Janet’s young fans were born yet. Though her fourth and last album, “Faithfully” was released in 1998, that’s still decades ago and anyone below the age of 30 still wouldn’t know it.

For a while, she worked with her sisters, La Toya Jackson, and Janet as a girl group but due to their creative differences, they dissolved it.

HER FAMILY

Rebbie was one of the more private siblings among the Jacksons whose pack of men including Michael Jackson famously comprised the Jackson Five. The same year the group signed to Motown in 1968, Rebbie married her high school sweetheart Nathaniel Brown who fathered her three children, Stacee, 48, Yashi, 41, and Austin, 33. Rebbie became a widow in 2013 when Nathaniel died of cancer.

BLENDING WORK AND FAMILY

Because music was in her genes and in spite of the family she was rearing, Rebbie collaborated with her siblings when she began performing live with them in 1974. She also joined her brothers in their TV show, “The Jacksons” which ran from 1976 to 1977. For a while, she worked with her sisters, La Toya Jackson, and Janet as a girl group but due to their creative differences, they dissolved it.

Since her last album in the mid-90s, Rebbie hasn’t been visible in the music scene. She became a grandmother in 2005 when her daughter Stacee, who married Rex Salas, gave birth to a son named London Blue.

Having focused on her family and private life in recent years, it may be the reason why her photo with Janet at the Billboard Music Awards caused quite a stir. Nevertheless, Rebbie was a breath of fresh air defying her 16-year age gap with her more visible youngest sister.
