With the case of Black maternal mortality rate on the rise, Tatyana Ali sat with Essence to discuss her harrowing experience during her first pregnancy.
The "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" star revealed that the birth of her son three years went "off script." According to her, her labour consisted of people – mostly strangers – screaming instructions at her.
Not knowing what to do, Tatyana worried for her son's safety. And when she thought she had no other options, she eventually asked for a C-section.
Things didn't get any better after she delivered her son as she remembers somebody telling her that she had the "pelvis of a man."
What made the experience even worse was that her son spent several days in the NICU as a result of his harrowing birth.
The revelation came when she was asked to participate in the Black Mama's Matter Alliance's 2018 Black Maternal Health Week. With this Pregnancy, Tatyana employed a Black midwife. The midwife encouraged her to honour her intuition and offered her the power of choice.
