Former NHL player Wayne Gretzky, considered by many the greatest player in hockey’s history, has a large family with his wife of three decades. He proposed over the phone!

Born in January 1961 in Canada, Gretzky has been skating since he was only two years old and playing hockey since he was six. From a very young age, it became evident that he had a natural talent at it.

Over 10,000 people were outside of the chapel waiting to see them.

WAYNE GRETZKY’S CAREER

In fact, Gretzky was so good as a child that he used to play in leagues with older boys even though most of them were bigger than him. As time went by, he kept improving, and in 1978, he represented Canada at the World Junior Championships.

If there was any doubt that Wayne Gretzky was meant to be an NHL player, he led the whole tournament in scoring.

In the fall of 1978, shortly after his outstanding performance in the World Junior Championships surprised everybody, he was signed by the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association.

While he was talented enough to play in an NHL team, the league’s age restriction prevented him from joining one.

The following year, though, Wayne Gretzky joined the Edmonton Oilers, his first NHL team. As expected, he dominated that competition, too, and he ended up taking home the Hart Memorial Trophy, the equivalent to the league’s MVP.

With the Oilers, Gretzky won the Stanley Cup four times – 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988. Shortly after winning his fourth title, the Oilers traded him to the Los Angeles Kings. Similarly, NHL star Sidney Crosby has also won two Stanley Cups.

Unfortunately, he failed to be as dominant as he was with the Oilers, and even though he led the Kings to their first Stanley Cup finals in 1993, he could never win a title with them.

In 1996, Gretzky left the Kings and started playing for the St. Louis Blues. The following season, he was transferred to the New York Rangers, where he spent his last three seasons before retiring in 1999.

JANET JONES AND WAYNE GRETZKY’S RELATIONSHIP

As per his love life, actress Janet Jones has been Wayne Gretzky’s wife since July 1988. During an interview with “In Depth with Graham Besinger,” the NHL player revealed that he and his wife met in “Dance Fever” in 1981, where he served as a judge.

After running into each other at different charity events, they went to a Los Angeles Lakers’ game in 1987. There, they realized that they had a lot of things in common, so their friendly relationship became a closer, more romantic one.

For years, it had been rumored that Gretzky proposed to his wife over the phone, and he confirmed it during that interview. He explained that she was supposed to be away from their Edmonton home for five or six weeks for her job. He added:

“It was just one of those things where, when you’re chatting on the phone... Basically, it was like ‘well, why don’t we get married?’ We just said, ‘yeah, why wait?’”

THEIR INCREDIBLE WEDDING

Wayne Gretzky pointed out, though, that when Jones came back to Edmonton, he took her to a “proper dinner” where he repeated the proposal.

One of the most shocking aspects of their July 16, 1988, lavish wedding is that over 10,000 people were outside of the chapel waiting to see them.

Gretzky pointed out that, since Edmonton was a small community that has always loved hockey, his ceremony was one of the biggest events of the year as people wanted to see him, Janet Jones, and the rest of the players in attendance.

He added that, since he spent years helping people and charities, they wanted to pay him back in a way, so his wedding became a city event. The Edmonton Orchestra, for example, volunteered to play in the church. Other people lent their cars for transportation purposes.

Ty, on the other hand, followed in his father’s footsteps and became a hockey player. His heyday was at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s school, but he eventually quit.

Trevor used to be an outstanding baseball player. The Chicago Cubs even signed him in 2011, but he failed to impress enough to stay in the MLB, so he spent most of his career playing for minor league teams.
