According to Closer Weekly, the actor paid tribute to the woman who always had his back through a post he shared on his Instagram. Along with several sweet family portraits that included his late mother, Van Der Beek wrote:
“My mom crossed over last week. Even though we knew this was coming — and had actually thought we were at the end nearly a year and a half ago — I’m still in shock.”
This would not be the first time that James would suffer a personal tragedy as [it was] previously disclosed that the actor and his wife, Kimberly, suffered a miscarriage.
The “Dawson’s Creek” star continued his caption by registering his gratitude that Melinda wasn’t in pain anymore and added that he was also feeling “sad, angry, and relieved.”
He ended the post by recalling all the times she came through for him and acknowledging that Melinda was a good grandmother to his five children — Joshua, Olivia, Gwendolyn, Annabel, and Emilia.
This would not be the first time that James would suffer a personal tragedy as USA Today previously disclosed that the actor and his wife, Kimberly, suffered a miscarriage.
The news was initially broken by the actor who wrote in an Instagram post that he and Kimberly were “overjoyed” when they learned that they were pregnant again.
Unfortunately, their joy turned into something else when they lost the pregnancy — the fifth miscarriage they would suffer since they started trying. It would be recounted that last October, James divulged that he and his wife had suffered three miscarriages in the past.
ET Online shared that the actor announced on “Dancing With The Stars” that Kimberly had miscarried yet again, in November. James revealed that an experience like that “breaks you open. It opens up your heart, it deepens your appreciation. It makes you more human.”
The DWTS alum then proceeded to give the audience and viewers a stellar performance to Hozier’s “Take Me To Church.” James was awarded a score of 27 out of 30 for that night’s dance.
