Pop star Justin Bieber's mother, Pattie Mallette gave birth to her son at the age of 19, and for years she and her only child were estranged.

While Bieber went through a difficult adolescence, much as she did, Mallette found God in Christ and her conversion made their relationship even more difficult.

Pattie Mallette's childhood, she revealed in her best-selling book "Nowhere but Up: The Story of Justin Bieber's Mom," was a horrific carrousel of abuse that started at the age of 3

MOTHER AND SON

26-year-old singer/songwriter Bieber has 144 million followers on Instagram alone and has been a star since he was 12 years old. For the last 14 years, his relationship with his mother has been fractious, and at one time he described it as "pretty nonexistent."

The rift between the two seems to be healing, especially since Bieber's conversion to Christianity, and his marriage to Hailey Baldwin -- but what now brings mother and son together, once drove them apart.

A TROUBLED CHILD

Pattie Mallette's childhood, she revealed in her best-selling book "Nowhere but Up: The Story of Justin Bieber's Mom," was a horrific carrousel of abuse that started at the age of 3, after her alcoholic father left her mother.

The tiny girl was first sexually abused by someone close to the family that Mallette will not name, and she was subsequently the victim of several abusers. Mallette reveals:

"I was sexually violated so many times that as the years went by it began to feel normal."

The abuse also installed in Mallette the belief that she was an unlovable "dirty" girl, and the solely responsible for the horrors visited upon her. By the age of 14, she was drowning out the pain with alcohol and drugs.

By 16, Mallette was on her own, supporting herself through petty theft, and occasionally dealing in drugs. At this time she was in a relationship with Jeremy Bieber, the man who would become the father of her only child.

JOINED IN THEIR FAITH

WELCOMING HAILEY BALDWIN

When Bieber married model Hailey Baldwin in 2018, Mallette was delighted and expressed her appreciation of her new daughter-in-law, calling her "a gift." Mother and son have rebuilt their relationship, although, as Bieber points out, they are of necessity physically distant since Mallette lives in Hawaii and he is currently residing in Los Angeles.

Nevertheless, the singer has made a point of bringing his family and Baldwin's together for holidays, surrounding himself with the big happy family he always dreamed of.

He is now closer to his father, Jeremy, who presented him with a baby sister Bay in August 2018, whom he shares with wife Chelsey. Bay is Jeremy's fourth child. He is also the father of Jaxon, 8, and Jazmyn, 10, from previous relationships.
