Robert Kelly Jr Was in Danger in Mom's Belly — More Facts about R Kelly's Son

R&B singer R. Kelly's youngest son Robert Kelly Jr. nearly died due to his father's abuse of his pregnant mother, Andrea Lee Kelly.

The Lifetime documentary series "Surviving R.Kelly" exposed the R&B singer's ongoing abuse of women and recounted the testimony of many of his victims, one of them his ex-wife, Andrea Lee Kelly.

Fans were stunned to learn that R. Kelly and dancer/choreographer Andrea's youngest child Robert Kelly Jr. nearly died in his mother's womb due to his father's abuse.

SURVIVING R.KELLY

In 2002, a heavily pregnant Andrea went to her obstetrician after being brutally sexually assaulted by her then-husband, R.Kelly. The doctor examined Andrea but could not detect the baby's heartbeat. Andrea recalled:

"I remember getting to the emergency room and (...) they had papers and signing and people were grabbing me and putting stuff in my arm.”

In order to save the baby's life, doctors had to induce labor immediately in the hope that they could save little Robert's life. Fortunately, Robert came out strong and healthy.

Andrea, who shares two other children with Kelly, was to endure his ongoing physical and emotional abuse for four more years before telling her husband she wanted a divorce.

The three children had no contact with R.Kelly even before his incarceration in Chicago where he awaits trial.

DISTANT FATHER

Kelly's response was predictably violent and Andrea was forced to file a restraining order against him. The ugly divorce was final in 2009, and R.Kelly was ordered to pay alimony and child support.

Kelly defaulted on both, and Andrea has revealed that he drew away from his three children, daughters Joann, 22, who sings under the name Buku Abi, Jaah, 20, who identifies as transgender; and son Robert Jr.

The three children had no contact with R.Kelly even before his incarceration in Chicago, where he awaits trial on several charges, which include child sexual exploitation and pornography.

Like his sisters, Robert Jr. has already demonstrated that he has inherited his father's talent for music and participated in a rap video made at his school.

MARTIAL ARTS

To judge from snaps Robert Jr. posts on his mother's Instagram, he is keen on martial arts and belongs to a Tonchu academy. Robert Jr. does not have an Instagram account of his own.

As yet, Robert Jr. is the only one of R.Kelly's children who hasn't commented on his father's disgrace or the crimes that have been attributed to him. Like his sisters, Robert Jr. refers to Kelly as "Robert Sr." and not dad.
