In a two-hour interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex candidly talked about the challenges they faced as part of the British Royal family. As expected, their conversation went viral.

Read on to learn the seven most revealing takeaways from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah, including his relationship with Princes William and Charles and her alleged feud with Duchess Kate Middleton.

BABY ARCHIE’S SKIN TONE

Since Meghan has a Black mother and a White father, it was possible that her son with Harry, Archie, could be born with dark skin. According to Meghan, there were “concerns and conversations” about it in the Royal family.

Harry, who was part of those conversations, pointed out that he’d never share details about them but also admitted that it was “awkward,” and he was shocked.

The Duchess of Sussex, who didn’t share any names, explained that she and her husband were surprised to learn that Archie wouldn’t receive either a Royal title or security.

For this reason, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were scared to “offer up” their child knowing that the Royal family would not do anything to keep him safe.

They tied the knot in a backyard ceremony.

MEGHAN MARKLE’S SUICIDAL THOUGHTS

By far, one of the most shocking things that Meghan and Harry revealed in their interview with Oprah was the Duchess of Sussex’s suicidal thoughts, especially because of the little help she got.

Since she faced racism, had a highly-demanding job, and dealt with frequent attacks by tabloids, she concluded that “it was all happening because I was breathing.”

Meghan confessed that she felt ashamed to admit it at the time (even to Harry because she knew how much loss he’s suffered). However, she realized that if she didn’t say it, she’d do it because “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”

It is important to point out that the Duchess requested help from the palace and even asked to go “somewhere,” but nothing really happened. She added that she couldn’t simply call a taxi because you “couldn’t just go.”

MEGHAN AND HARRY’S SECRET WEDDING

Most people remember Harry and Meghan’s big wedding, held on May 19, 2018, in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. However, the couple actually married in secret three days before.

Harry and Meghan said that their big wedding was a “spectacle” for the world to see, and they wanted their union just "between us," so they tied the knot in a backyard ceremony officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

It was actually Kate who left Meghan in tears.

PRINCES WILLIAM AND CHARLES

Unfortunately, Prince Harry’s relationship with his dad, Prince Charles, is far from perfect at the time, especially because Harry is “disappointed” by his father. The Duke of Sussex said:

“I feel really let down because [Charles] has been through something similar, and he knows what pain feels like, and Archie is his grandson.”

Harry also admitted that, when he and Meghan were discussing how to step back from their royal duties, Charles stopped taking his calls. He’s now retaking his son’s calls, fortunately.

The Duke of Sussex admitted that he will always love his dad and keep trying to heal their relationship. As per Prince William, Harry pointed out that he loves him “to bits,” but they are currently on different paths.

FEELING “TRAPPED”

It’s been said that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had plans to leave the Royal family ever since they started dating, but the couple told Oprah that it is not true.

Harry confessed, though, that he’d never leave if it weren’t for his marriage, but only because it opened his eyes to how he was “trapped” by the institution he was born into.

The Duke of Sussex said that his brother and father were trapped and “don’t get to leave,” and he has “compassion” for that.

THEIR REGRETS

While Prince Harry has no regrets because they did what they had to do, Meghan has one: believing that the Royal family would protect her. She pointed out that if they had done that, they wouldn’t have left.

Meghan said that it was important to separate some members of the Royal family and the administration that runs them, adding that unlike what some people think, Queen Elizabeth had always been kind to her.

Apart from that, she talked about her alleged feud with Duchess Kate Middleton. Six months after Harry and Meghan’s wedding, tabloids reported that she had made Kate cry over the flower girls’ dresses.

However, it was actually Kate who left Meghan in tears. While the Duchess of Sussex said that it wasn’t fair to detail the situation because Kate apologized, she felt hurt that the communications team did nothing to correct the news.

IT’S A GIRL!

In February 2021, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they were expecting their second child. During Oprah’s interview, they revealed it’s a girl. Harry said:

“To have a boy and then a girl, what more could you ask for? Now we’ve got our family, the four of us and our two dogs.”

Meghan and Harry also pointed out that two kids were enough for them. So far, they have not revealed when their upcoming baby girl will be born, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer.
