Officer Eric Tally, who was the first responder on the scene, was killed, along with nine other victims, Maris Herold, Chief of Police in Boulder, said at the conference.
Tally was a father of seven and had joined the police department in 2010 at the age of 40. Herold called his actions heroic and said:
"My heart goes out to the victims of this incident and I'm grateful for the police officers who responded. I am so sorry about the loss of Officer Talley."
The police have arrested a suspect in connection to the shooting. However, no details, including the other nine victims' identity and a possible motive, have been released to the media.
The suspect has been identified as male. He is currently in custody and being treated for an injury. CNN reported that the suspect might have been captured by video by a news helicopter.
A news helicopter captured footage of a shirtless man, who appeared to have blood on his arm and leg, handcuffed and put into an ambulance. However, it is not clear if he is the suspect.
Eye-witnesses spoke to various outlets about the shooting. James Bentz told the Denver Post that he had been in the store's meat section when he heard the gunfire. Bentz explained:
"I was then at the front of a stampede."
He was able to escape through the loading dock along with other customers. Unfortunately, others were not as lucky. Sarah Moonshadow shared she and her son had seen a body in the parking lot as they made their exit from the store.
Dean Schiller, another witness, told the Associated Press that he had left the store after hearing several gunshots. He then saw three people, two in the parking lot and one at the store's entrance, lying face down.
A large team of Law enforcement showed up at the crime scene including, the SWAT teams, multiple police vehicles and officers, and 3 helicopters, which landed on the store's roof.
Governor Jared Polis released a statement on Twitter that said that his prayers were with his fellow citizens while they learned the tragic attack's extent. This comes after the Atlanta Spa shootings last week.
