Story of the Day: Mother Threatens to Burn down Their House If Her Daughter Moves Out
Drama often abounds in mother-daughter relationships. This story of a daughter wanting freedom will make you reflect on the boundaries of maternal protectiveness.
Lily is 21 years old yet her mom still treats her like a child. Rachel, her mom, is quite the overthinker and this trait makes her extra protective of Lily who finds it suffocating.
One matter that really annoys Lily is how difficult it is to get her mom’s permission to go on a night out with her friends. Her mom would immediately think about all the bad things that could happen to her.

This had been the case since her father passed away when she was 12-years-old. A car accident in the wee hours of the morning took his life. Since then, Rachel had been in a constant state of paranoia.
She became extremely strict towards Lily and her younger brother, Marco. Because of her overprotectiveness, Lily and Marco’s social lives suffered. They could rarely go out of the house for leisure.
At 21, Lily thought her mom should already trust her enough. But the opposite was true. When she told her mom that there was a boy who asked her out on a date, the latter appeared to panic.

The first question that her mom asked was whether he drove a car. He did, and he had dropped her off at her house. Her mom, who had an online business, trusted only herself when it came to driving.
Lily told her she was out of her mind and that she should seek professional help.
She would insist on driving Lily and her brother when they needed to get somewhere and fetch them afterward. While she allowed her children to take cabs or Uber, this would always make her uneasy.

But the drivers she trusted the least are car owners. She was not being reasonable, but she would always point out what happened to their dad when Lily argued with her about it.
Lily reached the end of her patience one night after Michael, the boy who asked her out on a date, came to fetch her for their date. Her mom embarrassed him by insisting that she drive her to the restaurant.
She also insisted that she wait outside the restaurant to drive her home. The date happened, but it became uncomfortable for Lily and Michael. They did not enjoy it, knowing her mom was waiting for them to finish.
When they arrived home, Lily said she would move out of the house. She told her mom she was sick of her overprotectiveness. But Lily did not expect how her mom would respond.
In a fit of anger, Rachel took a lighter and threatened to burn their house down if Lily insisted on moving out. Lily told her she was out of her mind and that she should seek professional help.
In the end, Lily decided not to push through with her plan to live independently. She worried her mom would make good on her promise and she was concerned for her younger brother.
