A police officer discovered he was infertile and started visiting orphans at group homes. After some disappointment, he went to work and was greeted by the surprise God had prepared for him.

"Father John, it's not going to happen. This is my cross to bear. God doesn't want this for me," David shook his head and looked down at his shoes, perched on the pulpit at his church in his small town in Texas. He was a policeman and a devoted Christian, but sometimes, he questioned God's plan. Sometimes, he thought the Creator was wrong.

When David and his wife, Marianne, married, they immediately tried for a baby. When nature didn't work, they visited doctors, who determined that David was infertile. They had many options to become parents, but he would never biologically father a child. Back then, he cried, drowned in his sorrows, and even offered his wife an out.

David arrived bright and early at work, and everyone was abuzz. "What's going on?" he asked his friend, Officer Greg, who was carrying a blanket from the storage rooms in the police station.

But divorce was out of the question for her. She promised to be by his side through everything. "This is not going to make me break my vows. The vows I made in front of God," Marianne said, almost angrily, and that was the end of that discussion.

He couldn't fathom using a sperm donor, and adoption seemed like a foreign concept to him. But his wife convinced him to visit a few group homes in their areas to see if they could connect with a child. David fell in love. He adored all those kids, and they loved it, even more so when he came in his cop uniform.

He visited more often, sometimes with his police buddies, and eventually, he learned most of the children's birthdays. Marianne would bake a cake for all, and they would try to buy them some presents. Those days were the best times, and at some point, David connected with a five-year-old boy, Luke, who told him he too wanted to become a cop.

After much discussion and deliberation, he and Marianne decided to become the child's foster parents. However, another couple appeared, interested in adopting Luke right away. His wife wanted them to compete or try to find another solution. But David was scared.

"My love, this is another sign. Just when we make a decision, God sets this couple on this path to take our chance away. He doesn't want me to become a father. He will not bless us," he told his saddened wife, who cried but relented.

Now, he was at church sharing everything with Father John, as his words of wisdom were always encouraging.

"My son, this might sound cliché, but God has a plan. You have to believe that," the priest replied after hearing how sad David was about not becoming a father.

"But being a father is not part of it. I think I need to come to terms with that, and maybe, I'll be happier," David added, sighing heavily.

"I don't know what the Lord has in store for you, my son. But I believe – and you have to, too – that something beautiful is coming for you. Something you and your wife can't even imagine," Father John continued, and David nodded.

His words comforted him, but they did nothing to convince him. God had a plan for him, and although it was an odd path for other couples, maybe it was right for them. He and his wife would continue to visit group homes and celebrate birthdays, and David would also focus on his job, protecting the people of his town.

David arrived bright and early at work, and everyone was abuzz. "What's going on?" he asked his friend, Officer Greg, who was carrying a blanket from the storage rooms in the police station.

"Someone surrendered a baby this morning! The social worker is coming, but I think she looks cold, so I am taking a blanket for her," Greg said, lifting the blanket a bit to show him. He continued, and David couldn't help but follow.

Several officers were gathered in the breakroom, and as he got closer, David saw the tiny bundle on the arms of a policewoman. It was the tiniest, most precious being he had ever seen. And when his co-worker saw his admiring look, she offered to let him hold the baby girl.

He has hooked right away. The world disappeared; it was just him and her and the future. Everything about her future. Birthdays, graduations, a wedding, grandchildren, etc.

The social worker appeared, and David was pleased to see Lydia, who had known him from his time visiting group homes. He talked to her for a while, away from others but still holding the baby.

"Well, Officer Garcia. We've seen you with kids, and I think this will be the right fit. We'll need to do some inspections on your home, but I see no reason why you can't take this baby home. The mother might still return, but we'll go with the flow," Lydia replied, and David couldn't believe it.

He asked one of his pals to drive home because he refused to let go of the baby. "Marianne, I've got a surprise…," he sing-sang, entering his home. Marianne's eyes were wide and awed. He knew she saw the same future he did. The future God had always planned for them.

What can we learn from this story?

  • God has a plan for you, and you must trust it. God had a plan for David and Marianne, and although they faced disappointment, they later rejoiced from his blessing.
  • There are many ways to become a parent. All you need is love. Treatments, surrogacy, and adoption are alternatives for infertile people to have kids. But mostly, you just need to love.
