Prince Harry never foresaw what was to come when he married Meghan Markle. The American native is currently heavily blasted by the British media, which also happened to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. This has triggered bad memories for the prince, who constantly has to protect his wife from the press.

Per The Guardian, Meghan Markle opened up about her new life as a royal in October 2019. The Duchess of Sussex revealed that her friends warned her before marrying into the Royal Family that the British tabloids would ruin her life.

In an interview for the ITV documentary "Harry & Meghan: And African Journey," Markle admitted that her first year as a royal was tough and that she had had "no idea" what was to come being part of the Firm.

The Duchess knew that life with Prince Harry would be challenging but never anticipated the wrath it would bring to her life. She said when she first met the Duke of Sussex; her friends "were happy" for her because they could see that he made her happy:

"My British friends said to me: 'I'm sure he's great. But you shouldn't do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.'"

However, the Duchess said she brushed off the warnings and "naive" told them that what they were saying did "not make any sense" because, at the time, she was not featured in the tabloids. "I didn't get it. So, it's been complicated," the Duchess admitted.

Soon she found herself suing the Mail on Sunday over an allegation that it unlawfully published a private letter that she sent to her estranged father, Thomas Markle.

Her husband, Prince Harry, also took a stand against the British tabloids and accused them of a "ruthless" campaign against his wife.

The prince also sued the owners of the Sun and the Daily Mirror over alleged phone hacking. He said he refused to be bullied by sections of the media "into playing a game that killed my mom."

His mother's tragic death would always be fresh in his mind. There were moments when the Duke was reminded of the worst part of Princess Diana's life that his wife had to endure.

Prince Harry Relives His Worst Childhood Nightmare

Now that he is an adult, Prince Harry is trying to continue his beloved mom's legacy, and everything he does reminds him of her. During an interview with Tom Bradby, he admitted that attempting to finish what the Princess of Wales started two decades after her death "will be incredibly emotional," adding, "but everything that I do reminds me of her."

One of those memories is unpleasant. The father of two admitted to reliving the worst moments of his mom's life, constantly having clicking cameras nonstop wherever he goes, which comes with being a member of the Royal Family:

"Being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back. So, in that respect, it's the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best."

In the Apple TV + documentary series "The Me You Can't See," the royal described his upbringing as a "puzzling life" because he only yearned to be "normal."

In an interview with Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast, the royal compared his childhood to "a mix between 'The Truman Show' and being in a zoo.'"

As a child, the prince experienced the media's persistence. He remembered sitting in the backseat of the car while his mother tried to maneuver her way through the paparazzi.

However, she was unable to because she was crying behind the wheel. "There was no protection," he revealed. As a father of two and a husband, Prince Harry only wants to do what he could not do for his mom: protect his wife.

The Duke of Sussex Felt 'Helpless' Trying to Protect His Wife

To ensure that Markle was protected from the negativity, the Duke admitted that he felt "helpless" at times. Markle has found herself caught in royal drama on British tabloids numerous times.

An insider revealed that the constant backlash she receives from the press has "put pressure on her relationship" with her husband. The source explained that preventing negative press "and harm" for Markle has been difficult for the prince, adding it has always been his mission to keep her away from such.

Since the beginning of their relationship, he has been trying to shield Markle from media harassment. In November 2016, the Duke of Sussex's communications secretary released a statement on the Royal Website stating that Markle had been subjected to "a wave of abuse and harassment."

Through his secretary, the prince slammed those bombarding his then-girlfriend, accusing them of sexism and racism. He became overly concerned about her safety and "was deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her."

Several years later, now husband and wife, the Duke of Sussex still does his best to be the Duchess of Sussex's biggest supporter. This became apparent during Queen Elizabeth II's Westminster Abbey state funeral on September 18, 2022.

Funeral guest and attorney Pranav Bhanot revealed to People some moments he witnessed between the royal couple during the poignant service amid the royal feud. Bhanot shared the prince gave his wife "reassurance" when they walked side-by-side before going in separate ways:

"I noticed how supportive Harry was to Meghan. When they went their separate directions after the ceremony, he gave her a firm squeeze of the hand. I felt he wanted to ensure she felt comfortable."

Per Page Six, shortly after the funeral, the Sussexes flew back to the United States following an extended mourning period for the passing of Her Majesty. The pair departed from England a day after attending the sovereign's funeral services.

It turns out that the Duchess of Sussex had reportedly requested a face-to-face meeting with her father-in-law, King Charles III, before leaving the country. However, it seems her request did not materialize.
