Vicente Fernández's Children Followed Different Career Paths – Meet the Singer's 4 Kids
There is no doubt that Vicente Fernández will always be one of the greatest Mexican artists, and his legacy will continue thanks to the children who followed his career while others found a different career path.
The late Vicente Fernández, who died at 81 on December 12, 2021, was a father of four children with his wife, Maria del Refugio Abarca Villaseñor.
The couple welcomed Vicente Fernández Jr., Gerardo Fernández, and Alejandro Fernández as their biological children while adopting a daughter Alejandro Fernández.

Before his death, Vicente, born on February 17, 1940, in Huentitán El Alto, Mexico, was married to Maria, nicknamed "Doña Cuquita," for almost six decades.
Their relationship started when they were young. Even though the couple grew up as neighbors, their romantic relationship began after the musician had gone to live in Mexico City to pursue his music career.
At the time, Vicente was more focused on his career. Rather than hold on to a relationship he would not give full attention to, he asked her to date someone else.
As Vicente continued singing everywhere, Maria took his advice and started dating someone else. However, destiny had other plans for the couple. After he returned from a trip, he met her boyfriend, waiting for her at her house.
The musician told Maria he was giving her ten minutes to end the relationship because he would get married to her on December 27, 1963. The couple remained married from the said date until his death.
Vicente Fernández Jr.
Vicente and Maria welcomed their first son Vicente Fernández Jr. in Mexico City on November 11, 1963. He walked in his father's footsteps as a Mexican musician and accompanied his father on several musical tours.
The father-son duo had performed at venues such as the Whitey Theater in Mexico City and the Million Dollar in Los Angeles. Besides music, Vicente Jr. made cameo appearances in his father's films, such as "Tacos Al Carbón" and "Uno y Medio contra el Mundo."
Along with the fond memories, Vicente Jr. and Vicente also shared terrible memories. On May 20, 1998, they informed Vicente that some men had kidnapped Vicente Jr. from his ranch, Los Tres Potrillos.
The kidnappers had demanded an equivalent of over three million dollars and asked the famed singer not to inform the police or the public about what had happened.
Even though the information had gotten to him just before he stepped on stage to play at a concert in Morelia, he had to keep up appearances and act as if nothing had happened.
While Vicente was in agony over his son's kidnap, Vicente Jr. was facing worse at the hands of the kidnappers known as "Mocha Fingers." There were one of the most ruthless of the Mexican cartels and would usually cut off their victim's fingers.
While Vicente Jr. was in their custody, his father could not raise the ransom amount on time, so they cut off Vicente Jr.'s ring and pinkie finger on his left hand and sent these to his father.
After 121 days in captivity, Vicente was able to raise the money to release his son. However, Vicente Jr. still has post-traumatic stress disorder from the ordeal. Thankfully, the family got closure as some cartel members were later arrested.
Alejandro Fernández
Vicente's second son Alejandro was born on April 24, 1971. He also walks in his father's footsteps as a singer and first made his public appearance as a child in one of his father's shows in 1976.
He released his debut album "Alejandro" in December 1992, and the Lo Nuestro Awards, the Spanish-language awards show honoring the best of Latin music, nominated his album for the Regional Mexican Album of the Year 1993.
Alejandro began his career creating more traditional Mexican folk music but has branched into pop music over the years. By 2020, the musician, nicknamed "El Potrillo" by his fans, had released 16 studio albums and had performed a duet with Beyoncé Knowles.
The musician has released several live albums and sold over 30 million records worldwide. He is the most famous of Vicente's children, has won two Latin Grammy Awards, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.
Alejandro married América Guinart in 1992 and welcomed three children: Alejandro Jr. and twin daughters Camila and América. Six years later, they divorced, and he had two more children, Emiliano and Valentina, with Colombian model Ximena Díaz.
In 2016, Alejandro Fernández was photographed disheveled and shirtless at a Las Vegas party with two men by his side. The picture went viral, with some accusing him of being gay.
Rather than get angry over the media backlash, the musician took to Facebook to apologize in a lengthy post for being photographed ridiculously.
However, he did not apologize for having fun with his friends. He also cautioned his fans to be responsible while they party and have fun.
Gerardo Fernández
Gerardo is the youngest son of Vicente, born in May 1976. Even though he has a good voice like the rest of his family, he was never interested in making a career in the music industry.
He prefers to remain in the business world but once showed an interest in politics. In 2011, he sought a candidacy to be a deputy for the alliance between the Institutional Revolutionary Party and the Green Ecologist, but he did not win.
Besides his love for business with a focus on real estate, he shared his father's passions in breeding thoroughbred horses and charrería. However, he reportedly surpassed Vicente in the art of bull riding, known as jaripeo.
Alejandra Fernández
Alejandra is Vicente's adopted daughter, born to his sister-in-law, Gloria Abarca Villaseñor. He and Maria took her in when she was 40 days old.
When she was about four years old, her mother wanted her back and even succeeded in leaving with her. However, because she had developed a strong bond with her new family, she could not live with her mother for long.
Alejandra prefers to keep a low profile and avoids the media as much as possible. She is a graphic designer and a bag designer with the brand known as Alleza and was married to José Luis Altamirano before they divorced.
