The late actress's husband died years before her. The family would hold a private ceremony to bid Angela goodbye later. During a 1996 "60 Minutes" interview, the late star revealed how she found comfort and solace in her Los Angeles home's garden when "Murder, She Wrote" was canceled.

She shared how she grew vegetables, including tomatoes. In September 2018, Angela gave an exclusive interview with Studio 10 at her California home, where she noted that the trees in the area were the same as the ones in Australia.

Her interviewer, Craig Bennett, noted how the actress had gum trees and a Macadamia tree that the star wasn't aware of! The home had a deck with chairs and a balcony where Bennett and Angela viewed and discussed her lush greenery.

Speaking to Woman & Home in 2017, the actress confessed that "one" of the things that gave her the most joy was her family. She told the publication that she'd recently become a first-time great-grandmother when her grandson, Peter Jr., welcomed his first child.

The star said the experience felt wonderful and admitted to spoiling the child. Angela said one thing she wanted more of at that moment in her life was more grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Although she lived and died in Los Angeles, there was a time when the legendary actress left the city for the sake of her family. Angela put her career on hold to be there for her children.

Leaving Hollywood for a Quieter Life for Her Children

During a 1972 appearance on "The Dick Cavett Show," Angela spoke about having a home in Ireland. She revealed that she'd lived there quite a lot because it was easy to live there as one could anywhere.

The home was on the south coast of Ireland in a place called County Cork. The star described it as a "small house on a small piece of land" and noted that it afforded her family some country living.

Angela said she'd always wanted a house there, but after she bought it, her family drifted towards the rural homestead. Her family acclimated to the place quite quickly, and the actress shared how her children lived there too.

"The Little Women" star confessed that, back then, she preferred her Irish home over the United State's Southern California. She explained that her family moved at the height of her career because Los Angeles proved to be "too much" for her children.

Angela said her children chose to leave Los Angeles with her and her husband, Peter Shaw. The actress candidly revealed that the big city wasn't a suitable climate for her offspring because they fell into some traps that young people tended to fall into.

The star, who lovingly put her family first when she needed to, advised other parents in similar situations to move but noted that it wasn't easy. Angela was open to being frank with her fans about her life, hoping that it would prevent them from making the same parenting mistakes she did.

Some of the temptations her children faced while in Malibu included Deidre falling prey to Charles Manson's cult. Her mother said she was one of the young people who knew and was fascinated by Manson, adding:

"He was an extraordinary character, charismatic in many ways, no question about it."

Angela shared how she was drawn to Ireland because it was her mother's birthplace and somewhere her children could avoid bad influences. For a year, the actress didn't work and stayed put with her children and learned how to cook.

Her children thrived in their new setting, and Anthony quit his bad habits quickly, but Deidre took some time. The star's daughter eventually married and lived in Los Angeles with her husband, where they owned an Italian restaurant.

According to a 2007 Architecture Digest article, Angela's Irish home, where she lived with Peter for 53 years, was inspired by farm cottages. All the rooms were traditionally Irish, excluding the size of the home's main room, which boasted a fireside reading area and breakfast nook.

The warm, intimate, and inviting home also had an entrance hall. The kitchen featured a long dining table where Angela's family could keep her company as she cooked vegetables from the garden she tended.

The actress' [Angela Lansbury] children went on to have their own families and bore their mother many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On the first-floor hall was the cozy-looking main bedroom. The estate's courtyard was safely strapped down with steel to prevent the roof from being taken by strong winds.

Angela and Peter married in 1949 before welcoming Anthony and Deidre, and David was the English producer's son from a previous relationship. The actress took David as her own and built a great bond.

Although both parents had busy careers, David said their biggest priority remained to spend time with him and his siblings. During a July 2022 interview, he said:

"My father didn't have any hobbies at all — family was his hobby. Both of them always put family first."

In 2003, Peter passed on at 84 from heart failure, and his wife never remarried. During a 2014 interview, Angela described their relationship as "perfect" and revealed:

"He was everything to me: we were partners at work as well as husband and wife and lovers."
