Kim Scott Mathers' Life before and after Her Marriage to Eminem
Michigan native Kim Scott Mathers may be chiefly known for her intense relationship with famous rapper Eminem, but she has her own story. She was born a twin and is a mother of three. Despite many questionable choices and challenges since young, Scott Mathers now seems to lead an ordinary life.
Kim Scott Mathers and Eminem met as teenagers who had been experimenting with adult substances from too young an age. The pair grew on each other, almost a match made in heaven. They married twice and shared three daughters.
However, their relationship was tumultuous at most. Eminem dedicated quite a few unkind songs about his ex-wife, which triggered her downward spiral. She struggled with depression, had a few run-ins with the law, and suffered tragic losses.

Despite the ordeals she's had to overcome, Scott Mathers seems to have found her path as a children's books writer and illustrator. With fourteen under her belt already, having written or drawn for them, her career seems fruitful.
Kim Scott Mathers Had a Tough Childhood
Kim Scott Mathers and her sister Dawn came into this world on January 9, 1975, in Warren, Michigan. At 13 years old, the twins ran away, fleeing an allegedly abusive home.
Sources haven't specified where Dawn ended up at the time, but they reported that Scott Mathers was taken in by Eminem's mother, Debbie Nelson. Nelson released a memoir in 2007, "My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem," describing how Scott Mathers came to be in their lives.
She revealed that Scott Mathers and her twin never knew their biological father and had fled the sexual abuse they suffered from their stepfather. Nelson also claimed the likelihood of Scott Mathers's story being a "tall tale," as the alleged sexual abuse was never proven.
Describing Scott Mathers as a "troubled child," she added that there were other tall tales. Regardless, Nelson was determined to give Scott Mathers decent life. And so Scott Mathers was raised alongside her high school sweetheart from their teen years. Her sister, Dawn, sadly passed at age 41 from an overdose.
Kim and Eminem Met When They Were Teenagers
Kim Scott Mathers was 13 when she met Eminem, and the rapper was 15. They first encountered each other at a house party when Eminem stood shirtless on a coffee table singing the lyrics to an LL Cool J song. The rapper recalled noticing Scott Mathers, who stood at the doorway smoking a cigarette.
It was instant chemistry between the two, and their romance ensued. Eminem eventually dropped out of high school to make his break into the music scene. Following that risky decision, the rapper's mother, Debbie Nelson, threw them out of her trailer.
Having been forced into poverty, Scott Mathers and her ex-husband lived in troublesome areas riddled with drug use and theft. The rapper recalled losing "four TVs and five VCRs," within two years. By the time Scott Mathers was 21 and Eminem was 23, they were expecting their first child.
On December 25, 1995, they welcomed Hailie Jade Mathers. After her first grandchild's birth, Nelson allowed her son and his girlfriend back into her home. Still, it was an impossible living situation as Nelson would hurl insults and often threatened to kick them out again.
As her son recalled, Nelson was also a substance abuser and had mood swings. The Real Slim Shady explained that she would go to bed fine and randomly wake up, screaming at them to leave. However, Nelson claimed those allegations were false.
Four years later, Scott Mathers and Eminem tied the knot in 1999 but ended their union in 2001. During their divorce court proceedings, Scott Mathers requested joint custody of Hailie Jade. She reportedly also scored an annual $50K settlement.
In 2002, Scott Mathers became involved with the late professional tattoo artist Eric Hartter. Together they welcomed Scott Mathers's secondborn, Stevie Laine Scott, who previously went by Whitney. He reportedly also has a son named Parker.
However, nothing is known about him as he has no connection to her ex-husband. Scott Mathers and Eminem reconciled and remarried in January 2006. Yet, only a few months later, they went their separate ways for good.
By this time, Scott Mathers was knee-deep in drug abuse. It was one of the main reasons why she and the rapper separated again. Seeing that Scott Mathers was too consumed by drug addiction to raise both her daughters, Eminem took Hailie Jade, adopted Stevie Laine, and raised them together.
Before adopting Stevie Laine, the former couple also took guardianship of Scott Mathers's niece, Alaina Marie. Alaina Marie's mother, Dawn, battled drug addiction and couldn't care for her daughter. The couple also adopted Eminem's half-brother, Nate.
Scott Mathers also has two much lesser-known nephews, Alaina's brothers, Patrick and Adam. Despite only sharing one biological daughter with Scott Mathers, Eminem seems to have cared deeply for her, raising two children from her family.
Divorce, Remarriage, and Divorce Again
Regarding their first divorce, Rolling Stone reported that Kim Scott Mathers and Eminem settled on the physical and legal joint custody of Hailie Jade. It was a temporary agreement stating that Eminem would receive their Michigan home worth $450K, and Scott Mathers received $475K to find a place of her own to stay.
As per the Michigan state procedure, the former couple had to wait for 60 days, at minimum, before they could be officially divorced. Eminem's lawyer stated that he was happy about the settlements, especially regarding the custody of his daughter.

Although Scott Mathers and her twice-ex-husband tried to make things work after that first split, she admitted to being reluctant about a second wedding. She insisted they didn't sign a marriage license as she worried about another divorce and its potential effect on their kids.
Her fears were realized almost three months after remarrying as she claimed she was unexpectedly served with divorce papers. When news of their separation broke in April 2006, Scott Mathers opened up about it on a radio show.
She revealed that six weeks before filing for divorce, her ex-husband had left and gone no-contact. Scott Mathers also expected they would try to work things out further by bringing in a counselor once Eminem returned. She recalled:
"I was hoping he was going to come home and say, ‘I got us a counselor, let’s go.’ But you know it didn’t work out that way. I got an attorney at the door instead."
On the contrary, in a response statement, Eminem denied that Scott Mathers was unaware of their separation. The rapper admitted that they both realized marrying for the second time wasn't enough to solve "underlying issues."
Many of Eminem's Songs Are Dedicated to His Ex-wife Kim Scott
Although her ex-husband wrote fondly of their children, Kim Scott Mathers wasn't always afforded that grace. She opened up about how Eminem's "murder fantasy" songs affected her mental health.
Scott Mathers said her final straw was when the rapper performed another one of those murder fantasy songs during a concert while beating a blow-up doll she claimed resembled her. She recalled feeling degraded and battling suicide ideation, which eventually won that night.
Thankfully, she survived. However, before showing any remorse later in his career, Eminem did lose a good amount of supporters for his gory tracks, which included "97 Bonnie and Clyde," "Kim," "Say Goodbye To Hollywood," and more.
After the Divorce, Kim Scott Mathers Had New Difficulties
Eminem's ex-wife battled a heavy addiction to alcohol and drugs after splitting with the rapper, which progressively worsened. Kim Scott Mathers was also charged numerous times with driving under the influence and drug possession. In 2016, she was again charged with DUI following a car accident.
According to Fox2Detroit and The Detroit News, the case was sealed. This motion led to the media insinuating that she got "special treatment" since she was famous. However, she set the record straight in a radio show interview.
Scott Mathers denied that she and her family ever received special treatment in court cases. Moreover, she admitted that she purposely put herself in harm's way by causing the accident, as it was another suicide attempt.
