Schwarzenegger and Shriver were 63 and 55 when news broke that Schwarzenegger had fathered another woman's child. Before the divorce, Shriver was made aware that Schwarzenegger had fathered one of their longtime household staff's baby a decade before.
The news shocked many, and after it came out, Schwarzenegger relayed his regret for his actions. He mentioned that he asked his wife for her forgiveness and wanted privacy during that time. He said:
"There are no excuses, and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children, and my family. I am truly sorry."

It was also revealed that the "Terminator" alum had been financially providing for his illegitimate child and had known it was his child for many years. Shriver had no comment when the news broke.
Schwarzenegger often talked about how bad he felt about breaking up his family and how he had hurt the people he loved. He also acknowledged the impact it had on his illegitimate son, Joseph.
