On Robin Roberts' birthday, it seems appropriate to recount how she met her partner. The anchor of "Good Morning America" first met Amber Laign in 2005, after each of them had canceled their blind date twice. Luckily, when the third opportunity came around, they decided to do it and get it over with.

When they showed up for the date, they met each other and started talking. Both of them felt an instant connection, and they had a lovely time. Soon after, they went on a second date and told each other about their lives. Neither felt the initial anxiety anymore, and they knew they were right for each other.

Roberts' partner, Laign, has stuck by her side through many rough patches. Laign is a registered massage therapist who specializes in treating recovering injuries. Between 2008 and 2009, she studied at the Swedish Institute, training in a range of specialist therapies focussing on pain release and muscle repair.

Roberts' road to recovery was long and arduous, with setbacks piling on more setbacks.

Besides her day job as a massage therapist, Laign also co-founded the company Plant Juice Oils, which specializes in essential oils that help with breast cancer and menopause. She also has a taste for fashion, having previously worked for Berger & Stevens. Laign also loves dogs and owns a little guy called Lukas.

Laign always supports her partner regarding her work, but it seems she's a bit camera-shy. Roberts has opened up, saying, "Amber is someone who is very proud of what I do, but does not want to be the focus." Instead, she silently supports Roberts from backstage, although she was included in her memoir.

Roberts Fought Cancer with Laign by Her Side

Roberts' road to recovery was long and arduous, with setbacks piling on more setbacks. After her breast cancer cleared up, she was diagnosed with the extremely rare blood disorder, MDS. As part of her therapy, she needed a bone transplant, which kept her away from work and home for an extended period.

Despite Laign's reluctance to be in the spotlight, she did agree to be in Roberts' memoir, since she played a vital role in the TV anchor's recovery from cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Throughout Roberts' health struggles, Laign took up the role of caregiver, ensuring her partner made a full recovery.

After the "Good Morning America" host recovered, things took a turn for Laign. In February 2022, the couple announced that the massage therapist had been diagnosed and she would be starting therapy as soon as possible. Laign was diagnosed with the disease at the end of 2021. Roberts commented:

"I'm able to kind of give her a roadmap because I've gone through it. And I didn't realize how much I had blocked out during my journey, and it was because of sweet Amber — because she protected me and navigated for me. So, I'm doing the same thing for her."

The couple has no children to share this perfect patch of land with, although they do have an adorable Tibetan spaniel-papillon mix called Lukas.

The famous TV host teared up when she talked about her partner struggling through something she had to face. The anchor opened up about looking after Laign the way she had done and admitted to becoming "a puddle" whenever she thinks of what her partner is going through.

Although Laign's therapies were suspended temporarily due to unforeseen complications, she announced in July 2022 that she completed her radiation treatment by way of a happy video. In the video, she rang a bell and said, "My treatment is done, the course is run and I'm on my way."

Roberts and Laign after Illness

Now that the worst part seems to be over for the happy couple, they spend their time loving life and enjoying the time they have with each other. Besides their home in New York City, the two have another property in Connecticut where they can escape their busy metropolitan lives.

The house is a comfortable 3,296 square feet and was built in the 1990s. Around it stretches an impressive and well-maintained one acre of land. On top of that, the property features a beautiful pool, complete with artificial waterfalls, to create a peaceful atmosphere. They even have their own sauna.

The couple has no children to share this perfect patch of land with, although they do have an adorable Tibetan spaniel-papillon mix called Lukas. They adopted little Lukas from North Shore Animal League America after both their longtime furry companions sadly passed away.

At the time, Roberts' co-host, Lara Spencer, saw how miserable the two were about the loss of their pets, and she took action. She introduced them to the largest no-kill adoption and rescue center in Port Washington, where they found Lukas.

But they also spend time with their extended family. In July 2017, Roberts posted an adorable snapshot of her five new nephews and nieces. Her extended family is vital to her, and she ensures she keeps the family bonds strong. She commented:

"As my brother, sisters, their children and grandchildren all gathered together I couldn't help but think of our father. He always emphasized to us the importance of family."

Roberts turned 62 on November 26. After surviving what seemed to be an uphill battle with cancer and MDS, the TV host survived to spend time with her beloved partner, only for her to face the same illness. Luckily, both are out of the woods, and that deserves a loud, happy birthday, Robin Roberts!
