Patrick Dempsey's kids grew up watching their father on television. The actor, who wanted to be a hands-on dad, worked through his busy schedule to be there for Talula, Darby, and Sullivan, during their formative years.

Patrick Dempsey is famously known as Dr. Derek Shepherd from "Grey's Anatomy" or Matthew from "Will and Grace," but to his children, he is a dad.

The Hollywood star is a father to three kids, Talula, Darby, and Sullivan, who are all aware of his fame. Once discussing his heartthrob status in the industry, Patrick revealed that his kids make fun of him as a joke.

"I'm just dad," he said. "Either you're 'cool dad' or not. It depends on where they're at in their development stage." Despite Patrick's success as an actor, he remains humble and grateful, thanks to his supportive family.

In 2008, Patrick credited having a big brood for helping his relationship with his wife, Jillian Fink, stay strong. More so, his relationship with the kids has been nothing short of wonderful since his fatherhood journey began. Patrick and Fink became first-time parents when they welcomed their only daughter, Talula, on February 20, 2002. Although she was rarely in the spotlight, Talula was not shielded from the world and was often seen bonding with her father.

Despite his busy work schedule, Patrick wanted to be present in his daughter's life. He worked towards a healthy work-life balance and spent some days horseback riding with Talula and bringing her to movie sets.

His career never stopped him from doing normal father-daughter activities, so whenever time allowed, he would drive Talula to school. According to People, he shared about their close relationship:

"We would talk about all kinds of things. We listen to the news and discuss it. [...] You want those moments. They go by very quickly, so you try to get them in when you can."

True enough, it seemed that Talula grew up in a blink of an eye. Her father admitted that his once little girl suddenly walked passed him as a high school student. As a father, Patrick knew he had to accept his children growing up.

At 15, Talula was spotted walking the streets of West Hollywood with her father in what seemed to be a shopping spree session. The duo was photographed laughing and smiling in Los Angeles, wearing matching gray tops.

They also sought professional help from a couple's counselor to resolve their differences. The couple eventually abandoned the divorce and remained married.

During her high school years, Patrick referred to Talula as a creative student who spent a summer break studying in London. After graduating in 2020, Talula received her college education in Washington, DC.

Patrick Dempsey Found Out His Wife Was Pregnant with Twins in between Filming "Enchanted"

Five years after having Talula, Patrick and Fink welcomed twin boys Darby Glen and Sullivan Patrick. According to the actor, he found out about his wife's pregnancy while shooting scenes for Disney's "Enchanted." Speaking at the "Disenchanted" premiere, the actor recalled:

"We found out during the course of the first movie that my wife was pregnant with the twins. That was halfway through the shoot, and my daughter was a few years old at that time."

On February 1, 2007, Fink gave birth to Darby and Sullivan in Los Angeles. Although twins Darby and Sullivan had distinguishing characteristics since they were born. Darby was given the same middle name as his father and had blonde hair, while Sullivan had black hair.

As a present father, Patrick witnessed his boys trying to walk independently. In a previous interview, he revealed the joy the twins brought while looking like "drunk little men" trying to get from one place to another.

Patrick also described their different personalities, where Sullivan was more humorous while his twin liked being quiet. The boys have since grown into young men. At 15, Darby showed interest in playing soccer and had his father involved as the coach of his team.

Meanwhile, Sullivan is slowly following in his father's footsteps as an actor. "I think with your kids, whatever their passion is, you give your support. You give them the opportunity to try what they want to try," the proud father said.

While Dempsey's family seems happy, things are not always the same. In 2015, he and his wife nearly divorced after his lack of time for their marriage. The process for divorce had already started when a source revealed that the couple tried to work through their marital relationship.
