Arthur Saint Bleick Is Supportive of His Mother Who Has an MS Diagnosis – Facts about Selma Blair's Son
Years after welcoming her son, Arthur Saint Bleick, actress Selma Blair revealed he had been through and seen a lot after her MS diagnosis. However, Arthur reassured his mother that, in his eyes, she was not sick, she was brave.
Selma rose to fame for her impressive performances in films such as "Cruel Intentions." A popular face on the Hollywood acting scene, she often shared pieces of her life on social media – her relationship with her son included.
She was nearing 40 when she welcomed Arthur with her ex-partner and has since documented how much he has grown on her Instagram.
Arthur's Mother Had A Very Difficult Labor
In January 2011, Selma and her former partner announced they were expecting their first child. As luck would have it, the news came around the same time Selma was nominated for a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for the audiobook, "Anne Frank: The Diary Of A Young Girl: The Definitive Edition."
The actress and her fashion designer ex-boyfriend decided to keep the gender of their child under wraps until he was born. "Hopefully, it's one or the other," Selma joked. Selma and her ex had been dating for around a year before they fell pregnant, and a close friend said:
"They are ecstatic. They couldn't be happier."
In July 2011, Arthur was born and weighed seven pounds and twelve ounces. His mother was 39 when she gave birth, and in honor of Arthur's eighth birthday in 2019, Selma shared her difficult experience with childbirth.
She took to social media to share that she had been painfully induced into labor after her doctors explained to her that Arthur was weeks late. After thirty-seven hours of "horrific" labor with non-dilation, Selma needed the relief of an epidural.
"I was at their mercy," she said. She further detailed how she had to "fire" a doctor who tried to convince her to opt for a Caesarean section. Arthur was delivered by Dr. Paul Crane, an obstetrician and gynecologist whose patients included Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, and Kris Jenner.
Selma decided to share the emotional story of Arthur's birth on his eighth birthday as she was unable to spend it with him. Instead, Arthur spent his special day with his dad, which was a bitter-sweet moment for his mother.
Although she knew he was happy, as he had spent the day at the beach, being without her son brought tears to her eyes. In a since-deleted Instagram post, she wrote:
"I slept (for) two hours. There is a pain in my head (and) in my throat where the tears start. I want to smell him, tell him I am so proud of him, (and) hold him. And I will, just not on his birthday, which is today."
Fortunately, Arthur and his mother were together for his eleventh birthday. In July, Selma shared pictures with her son and his father and called Arthur her "biggest love."
Arthur's Life Is an Open Book for His Mother's Fans
In 2019, Arthur joined his famous mother and many others on Instagram. At the time of writing, the first picture he posted received over a thousand likes, and he had garnered over four thousand followers.
He also regularly appeared on his mother's page. In a post that received over fifty thousand likes, Selma took to Instagram to celebrate Arthur's tenth birthday.
In December 2021, Arthur was featured alongside his mother in an H&M advertisement for cozy holiday knitwear. In outdoor and indoor snaps, the mother-son duo sported similar haircuts as they were wrapped in each other's arms.
In October 2021, Arthur was his mother's date for the screening of her documentary, "Introducing, Selma Blair." They walked the carpet together, and when an interviewer asked if Arthur was proud of his mother, he replied, "Yes."
In October 2022, Arthur showed his support for Selma when he was a familiar face in the crowd during her dance routine on "Dancing With The Stars." Selma shared pictures of her son backstage and supporting his mom from the audience.
Arthur Calls His Mother "Brave" amid Her MS Diagnosis
In 2018, Selma was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, or what is commonly known as MS. Living with the chronic disease meant the actress had good days and bad days.
She chose to be transparent about her diagnosis with Arthur and the physical challenges it might bring. However, the actress was impressed with how well her son handled her sickness. She said:
"He's had to endure a lot; he's seen a lot. He says, 'Mommy's not sick. Mommy's brave.'"
Selma explained that she maintained the same level of transparency with other children who asked about the "funny" way she walked and talked, which was due to the MS.
Arthur loved when Selma visited his school because she made the other children laugh. It was one of the actress's proudest moments knowing she wasn't an embarrassment to her son, which had been her concern.
Selma revealed that her son had a great sense of humor and said that one of their favorite things to do together was to play an MS-friendly version of dodgeball.
Due to her sickness, Selma's reflexes are not what they used to be. She humorously revealed that they would take turns throwing the ball at each other while the other sat still. However, Arthur would do so "really chivalrously."
Arthur's Father Works in the Fashion Industry
Selma and Arthur's father, Jason Bleick, ended their romance over a year after their son was born. A source said constant fighting led to the demise of their relationship. However, they have Arthur's best interest at heart and maintain a good relationship for his sake. They also temporarily lived together after their split.
Jason is the founder and creative director for EVER fashion line, and prior to that, he was the vice president of design at Quicksilver. He met Selma Blair after they collaborated for EVER, and have since become great co-parents.
