Clint Black & Wife Lisa Hartman's New Year's Eve Meet Turned Into Solid & Enviable Marriage of 31 Years
- Clint Black and Lisa Hartman met on New Year's Eve in their hometown - December 2022 marked 33 years since they crossed paths and 31 years celebrating a holiday as a family.
- Black turned his actress wife into a singer - as Hartman became "more than his muse."
- The couple and their grown-up daughter make a remarkable trio as she sings with them.
Husband and wife duo Clint Black and Lisa Hartman met through their passion for music, and although he was not feeling his best self at the time, she made him feel at ease.
Country singer Clint Black met his future wife, pop singer Lisa Hartman, in 1990 on New Year's Eve. He performed in his hometown, Houston, Texas, and she attended the concert.

The pair grew up in the same city, and it was Black's first time headlining an event back home. However, he had a cold at the time, and scores of people were waiting for a meet and greet backstage, which made him feel even more uncomfortable.
The "Killin' Time" hitmaker told Country Living in August 2016 that falling in love then was the last thing on his mind. "I'm in my hometown, and there are 100 people waiting to meet me. It was a swirling cacophony of chaos. I had been dealing with that out on the road, but it wasn't natural for me. It's not natural for anybody," he explained.
While trying to overcome the overwhelming feeling, his manager introduced him to Hartman, and nothing else mattered to him at that moment. After locking their eyes, Black was instantly captivated by her.
Their connection was more than physical; Black said he found the actress "pleasant." The two only had a brief meeting, but people close to them ensured they crossed paths again.
The plan worked out as Hartman and the musician went out for dinner during his visit to Los Angeles for a "Tonight Show" appearance. They continued to see each other afterward.
As the "Knots Landing" star got to know the record producer, she admired him even more than before. The pair soon realized there was more to their chemistry and decided to explore it. Black said from that point onwards, his gut told him that he could have a life with Hartman:
"I knew intuitively that she could be trusted with my heart and my life."
That said, the couple wed exactly ten months and 20 days after they met. On October 20, 1991, they exchanged wedding vows at Black's Texas farm.
In 2012, the lovebirds reflected on their love journey while participating in Anderson Cooper's "The Not So Newlywed Game." When asked who initiated the first kiss, Hartman wrote that it was her husband, who also jotted down the same answer.
Although the pair ended up getting married, Hartman did not initially believe in the institution of marriage. She admitted this in an interview with People in August 1992:
"The thought of spending my whole life with just one person didn't make sense to me."
Black was equally reserved about getting hitched and vowed never to walk down the aisle. He said he was having too much of a good time being a bachelor.
The songwriter explained he had no issue being in relationships but never seemed to be fully invested in them because of his busy schedule. Still, that all changed when he crossed paths with Hartman.
Black asked the "Tabitha" alum to marry him in September 1991 during a preshow workout on a Salt Lake City college running track. Hartman divulged that she and the country crooner had a heart-to-heart about their future together:
"We started talking about life and how much we meant to each other. It was probably an endorphin high or something, but he asked me to marry him, and I said yes."
Inside Black & Hartman's Successful 31-Year Marriage
When the couple's relationship made headlines, they were considered a somewhat odd pair. However, they have transformed their union into a desirable and enduring one. Black revealed how he and his wife have kept their romance going:
"Love is something that you nurture and protect. We've grown together in our relationship and never apart."
The two welcomed their one and only child, daughter Lily Pearl on May 8, 2001. Hartman and Black celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in October 2021.
The father of one marked the special occasion on Twitter alongside a throwback photo of the couple on their wedding day, cutting a cake. Black sang his wife's praises, tweeting:
"30 years ago today, Lisa and I said 'I do' and started our wonderful life together! She's a wonderful wife and mother to our Lily Pearl. We're so lucky we found each other!"
In June 2021, the "State of Mind" singer wished his spouse a happy birthday with a sweet message on Instagram. Black posted a series of pictures with the mother of his child and once again emphasized how marvelous she is.
When asked how he knew Hartman was the one, the Hollywood star responded: "When she stalked me." The mother of one shared a different response, saying Black knew he loved her after learning that she could not cook.
Meanwhile, he is the opposite in this case, and Hartman revealed that what people may not know about her husband is that he is a good dancer.
Hartman became Black's muse, inspiring the songs he wrote. The Hollywood star has made a significant impact on his life overall.
The producer – also known for "Deadly Blessing" – became Black's singing partner. At first, she was reluctant to feature in his music career but later caved after his persistent persuasion. The duo released their first musical collaboration in 1999 with "When I Said I Do."
"When we got married, my capacity to feel deepened," Black once said of his musical inspiration. He is guided by his relationship with Hartman and wants their romance to relate to others when writing songs.
The Couple's Only Child Followed in Their Footsteps
Black and Hartman are not the only singers in their household; their daughter Lily has also taken an interest in the musical path. When the couple announced their first-ever tour, "Mostly Hits & the Mrs," in June 2021, they revealed their child, an aspiring country music artist, would join them on the road.
While studying music at Nashville's Belmont University, Lily opted to take a gap year. It was her father who suggested she accompany them on tour. Elated at the thought, Lily revealed she started screaming and nearly cried after hearing her dad's suggestion.
She considers her famous parents her "best friends" and said the good part about being their child is having "fun" together.
Lily shared she had an "easy and normal" childhood and that now that she is growing into her own person, she does not find the process "super-overwhelming" because her mom and dad laid down the foundation for the journey.
From an early age, she showed an interest in the performing arts. Lily was part of a rock band in high school, and that was where her passion for singing came about.
Her father said he used to hear her sing all the time. When Black and Hartman discovered their daughter's talent, they became more attentive. They asked about her career aspirations, where she wanted to study and which career she wanted to pursue, and, more importantly, what they had to do to support her dreams.
The proud dad said he and his wife refrained from dictating which route their child should take. Black has 13 No.1 singles under his belt and has had a thriving musical career.
However, Hartman, who recorded four albums in the 1970s and 1980s – did not reach his heights, and she bowed out of the music scene after they married. She explained that her husband's career was so on par that she decided to stop pursuing hers.
In November 2022, Hartman gushed about her daughter's talents, revealing she plays drums, trumpet, and guitar and is working on her writing skills.
The youngster released an EP that same month that included her first studio recording co-written by her father and the acclaimed composer David Foster.
In April 2022, Lily joined her parents at the Grand Ole Opry, and they performed "Living in the USA" onstage. In November 2022, the trio was set to appear on their second night of the tour, but the family patriarch released a postponement statement hours before the event.
In December 2022, his daughter joined him for their Wichita Orpheum Theatre performance as she sang her heart out on stage. Sadly, Black's wife could not be there with the father-and-daughter duo because she was not feeling well.
