Loutelious 'T.J.' Holmes Jr. was born in West Memphis, Arkansas, on August 19, 1977. He trained as a journalist at the University of Arkansas, graduating with a degree in broadcast journalism. His professional career began in Missouri, where he held multiple roles at KSNF, including reporter, anchor, and producer.

He later joined KHTV back in his hometown as a reporter and weekend anchor. Despite covering major stories at KHTV, such as the 2004 summer Olympics, he only rose to national prominence after joining CNN. He worked there for five years before joining other broadcasting networks such as BET and MSNBC.

Holmes joined his current employers in 2014, albeit temporarily at first. However, within months, he became a permanent employee.
