Karen Grassle was the actress who played the role of Caroline Ingalls in "Little House on the Prairie," a long-running Western television series. In 2022, the star who played the historical figure was now 80 years old and looked fantastic!

In December 2022, the mother, who was still going strong, shared an Instagram image of her smiling and looking happy and healthy. She held a gingerbread house in her hands while a Christmas tree stood next to her.

The actress explained how the Bay Area, where she lived, had rain the previous weekend. She revealed that despite the bad forecast, she and her son, Zachary "Zach," "braved the weather" and managed to find a Christmas tree, presumably the one featured in the photo.

Grassle also noted how they made gingerbread houses for the festive season, and she appeared to have enjoyed the motherly bond she got to have with her son. However, Zach wasn't the only child with whom the star got to build memories over the years.

How Many Children Does Karen Have and How Did She Become a Mother?

Grassle wasn't like her "Little House on the Prairie" character because, in real life, she didn't have many children. The actress only married twice in her life, with her second ex-husband being James Alan Radford.

The duo got married in 1982 and adopted two children, Zach and Lily before they divorced in 1987. However, from a previous relationship, James had three other children.

In 2020, the "Not to Forget" actress explained how they ended up adopting because she'd wanted a child, but they had problems. They were close to starting fertility treatment when they began getting in touch with people who knew information about adoption.

A friend of the actress told her to call a certain woman, and the person was the pal's adoption lawyer. The attorney happened to know a young woman who was looking for a couple to adopt her child, and the star said:

"It really felt like destiny."

Grassle ended up becoming a single parent and raised her children on her own. Despite the challenges she faced, the actress loved the role a lot and even discussed the comparison between her and Ingalls.

What Kind of Mother Was Karen?

When asked if she could compare herself to Ingalls in "Little House on the Prairie" as a mother, Grassle balked and confessed she would've fallen short! The actress said the series was an "idealized version" of real family lives.

However, the star shared that she did the best she could while most of the time she was a single mother. Grassle noted how that role came with challenges of its own, but she loved being a mother!

The actress loved spending time with her children, like in March 2022 when she shared Instagram photos with them. The star explained how her shoulder surgery had gone so well at the time that her son invited their friends over for dinner.

Grassle also shared how it was one of the friend's belated birthday celebration as well. The pal received a stuffed shark as a gift because he enjoyed swimming with them, and in September 2021, she shared a throwback celebration of Zach's birthday with Instagram images of his cake and decorations, writing:

"Love spending time with my son Zach, especially when we are celebrating his birthday! #tbt"
