Joseph Tedrick Costner is the third child of Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Costner and "Dances with Wolves" actress Cindy Silva. He was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 31, 1988. His parents were screen actors, and even after tasting what it's like to act, Joe chose his own path.

Joe's mother, Cindy, was also born in California on October 29, 1956. She is currently retired from acting but her husband, who she married before fame, is still active in Hollywood. His acting career was initiated when he moved to Hollywood to chase his dreams and got featured in a soft-core sex film.

Now in his thirties, Joe does not shy away from bonding with his father. When Joe was a one-year-old baby, his father starred in the Lawrence Gordon film, "Field of Dreams." Years later, in 2021, Kevin got the opportunity to play catch with his son on the field from the movie. He shared his thoughts:

"Joe was just a baby when we made Field of Dreams—a movie ultimately about the relationship between a father and son. It felt completely full circle to share this incredible experience with him."

Joe was part of his father's first set of children. Kevin was highly present in his children's lives throughout his younger years, contrary to the typically complicated work life of an emerging actor. In his second marriage, Kevin hopes to give his youngest children the same experience.

Joe Was Born into the Family of a Famous Actor

Born in LA, Joe was in the heart of the film industry. He first encountered acting in 1996, starring in "Tin Cup" alongside his father and older sisters. The film is a sports romcom about a professional golfer who passes his peak but is determined to get his swing back to win the antagonist's girlfriend's heart.

Joe gravitated towards music as he grew older. In 2014, his father announced that he had graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder. After graduating, Joe pursued a career in audio engineering and production sound mixing.

His father praised his musical talents and complimented him for having a "solid personality." Using his master's degree, the musician gained compelling experience with ProTools, studio recording, documentary, and commercial production.

Joe Spends Time with His Father Even after His Parents' Split

In 1994, Kevin and his wife of 16 years, Cindy Silva, underwent an amicable divorce following a heap of rumors surrounding the "Yellowstone" star's battles with infidelity. Reports of Kevin's affair with a Hawaiian Hulu dancer tipped the scale and finalized the separation.

Joe's mother, Cindy, was also an actress, popularly recognized for her role in "LiteWeight." For a very long time, Joe was his father's youngest child. After the divorce, he stayed with his father at his Hollywood residence and with his mother, who shared custody of the children with Kevin.

Joe's father has always aggressively gone after what he wants. The movie star believes his warrior spirit is something his children have witnessed and sourced valuable lessons from. According to him, he is an example to his kids of one who always stands by their opinion.

Joe remained Kevin's youngest child for eight years until his relationship with Bridget Rooney. In 1996, Bridget gave birth to Joe's oldest half-brother and Kevin's fourth child, Liam Costner. Kevin only exchanged vows in 2004, a decade after his divorce, with designer Christine Baumgartner.
