Gil is the son of Gilbert and Rebecca Birmingham. He experienced quite a difficult childhood due to several factors, including constant moving due to his father's career in the army. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a bodybuilder and musician in the early 1980s.

However, he soon made a career move to television, making his debut in 1986. Although Gil is recognized as a Native American actor, he did know he was a descendant of the great tribe of Comanche until he became a teenager. Still, he keeps many aspects of his personal life out of the public's eye.

Gil Birmingham Didn't Know He Was of Comanche Descent until He Was 14

Gil was born in the San Antonio area of Texas on July 13, 1953. Before he turned 14, he believed that he was of Spanish, Mexican, and English descent. Rightly so, since Rebecca was of Spanish descent. However, he is also a descendant of the Native Americans from his father, who came from the Comanche tribe.

It is said that it took time for him to find out about his roots due to Gilbert's fear of prejudice against his people. Incidentally, Gil's character in "Yellowstone" also went through a similar situation. Furthermore, he faced many challenges in his childhood, including living a nomadic life because of his father's military career.

Gil characterized Gilbert as an uncompromising disciplinarian and Rebecca as a religious diehard with well-established boundaries that could not be crossed. The parents would not let him participate in extracurricular activities at school, which led to his isolation.

Those circumstances contributed to his running away from home, eventually becoming a ward of the court after the police found him. He lived in a Los Angeles boys' home until a foster family took him in at 16.

He later moved in with his high school guidance counselor, which proved to be a good move as he got help with stable housing and a chance to go to college. Gil attended the University of Southern California, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petrochemical Engineering.

Gil Birmingham Came to Acting after Trying Music and Bodybuilding

After graduating from college, Gil worked as an engineer for several years before quitting the job when he realized it wasn't what he was passionate about. He said, "I felt I needed to express myself, to create. At first, it was music. When I picked up the guitar, I thought this is me." He has become an accomplished blues music performer.

Shortly after picking up music, Gil also began viewing bodybuilding in the same creative light, saying, "I was fascinated that you could sculpt a body like a piece of sculpture." Bodybuilding helped him get his first on-screen breakthrough as he was featured in Diana Ross's 1982 hit song, "Muscles."

After that video, the ambitious Gil saw a career in acting as a viable option. He then sought the services of Larry Moss and Charles Conrad, who gave him acting lessons. At the time, he also got another job as Conan the Barbarian at the Universal Studios theme park in Hollywood.

Gil Birmingham Prefers to Keep His Personal Life Away from the Media Spotlight

Besides the success Gil has experienced on-screen, he has managed to keep his off-screen life away from media attention. Many believe that he is not married, and it is difficult to determine if he has ever been married.

The only mention of his romantic life was when he was talking about his time shooting Ross' music video during a 2017 interview with USA Today. He recalled, "I had a great time on it and my girlfriend at the time said, 'Why don't you study (acting)?'"

Gil resides just outside Phoenix, Arizona, where he claims he moved to get away from the busy life of Los Angeles and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle.

Although he faced a difficult childhood, Gil overcame many obstacles. Gilbert and Rebecca's inability to show him love did not have a lasting effect on him. They never acknowledged his acting career. However, when Gilbert passed away in 2004, Gil found out that he had each copy of everything Gil ever appeared in.
