Gil is the son of Gilbert and Rebecca Birmingham. He experienced quite a difficult childhood due to several factors, including constant moving due to his father's career in the army. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a bodybuilder and musician in the early 1980s.

However, he soon made a career move to television, making his debut in 1986. Although Gil is recognized as a Native American actor, he did know he was a descendant of the great tribe of Comanche until he became a teenager. Still, he keeps many aspects of his personal life out of the public's eye.

Gil Birmingham Didn't Know He Was of Comanche Descent until He Was 14

Gil was born in the San Antonio area of Texas on July 13, 1953. Before he turned 14, he believed that he was of Spanish, Mexican, and English descent. It is said that it took time for him to find out about his roots due to Gilbert's fear of prejudice against his people. Incidentally, Gil's character in "Yellowstone" also went through a similar situation. Furthermore, he faced many challenges in his childhood, including living a nomadic life because of his father's military career.

Gil characterized Gilbert as an uncompromising disciplinarian and Rebecca as a religious diehard with well-established boundaries that could not be crossed. The parents would not let him participate in extracurricular activities at school, which led to his isolation.
