Her parents disowned Sienna after adopting a blind boy from a shelter. Years later, Sienna's parents would need help from the very boy they rejected.

Sienna was very shy as a child, and she struggled to make friends. So, when she met Jenny, it was one of her greatest childhood joys.

Jenny and Sienna were from completely different worlds. Jenny was from a poor family, while Sienna was from a wealthy family. They met by complete chance at a park one day and instantly clicked. Jenny was always an outcast, but Sienna made her feel she had a place in the world.

They became best friends, meeting at the park every day after school. Sometimes Sienna would walk Jenny home, and it grieved her to see their impoverished living conditions. She didn't understand why some people had to live in poverty while people like her had more than they needed.

"Adoption? Are you out of your mind, Sienna? You can't just bring in a random kid from the streets into our family!"

Sienna's heart was broken when, one day, she learned that Jenny would be going into foster care. Jenny's mom and dad's parental rights were revoked by the state because they couldn't afford to provide the necessary living conditions for raising their child.

Sienna desperately wished she could help her friend. She didn't want to lose her, but she was powerless. Jenny soon moved into foster care in another city; Sienna was shattered. She tried to find Jenny, but her efforts were in vain.

Years later, when Sienna was all grown and married, she decided she would adopt a baby even though she was able to have one of her own. She figured it was her duty to help provide a child with better living conditions and opportunities. However, her parents were against it.

"That's a disgrace, Sienna!" her father added.

Sienna and her husband decided they would still go through with it anyways.

They went to the adoption shelter, and Sienna was instantly drawn to a quiet blind boy named Luke.

The caretaker at the shelter explained that nobody wanted to adopt him, which only made her want to adopt him more. He was an outcast, just like her Jenny.

"One adoptive parent even took him in and then returned him within three days," the caretaker sadly explained.

Sienna had her mind made up. She was going to adopt. Her husband was a little worried about the difficulty of raising a blind child, but he supported Sienna nonetheless.

Her parents were enraged by Sienna's decision. They tried to persuade her to reconsider, but she wouldn't budge. So, they disowned Sienna saying:

"We can't have a stranger's blind boy as our heir."

While her parents' words hurt Sienna, she was happy to start her new family. Sienna and her husband loved Luke dearly, and they grew closer and closer as time passed. Sienna and her husband would read poems and books every day.

As the boy grew, Sienna and her husband learned he had a unique ability. Luke had a perfect memory and the ability to recite poems word for word. He started voicing children's books, poetry, and later even cartoons.

"Sienna, my child, I know we've had our differences. But I need your help."

Sienna and Luke decided to open up an audiobook agency. The first few years were tough, but soon their company began gaining traction. It later became very successful, and Sienna was so proud of Luke.

He had overcome so many odds as an outcast, and it made her think of Jenny. She hoped that Jenny made it through her odds and found her place in the world.

One day, she received an unexpected call from her father. He sounded like a shell of his former self, in deep despair.

"Sienna, my child, I know we've had our differences. But I need your help," he explained.

It turned out that Sienna's father was in an accident and hit someone with his car. After this, he was hit with multiple lawsuits, which brought their business to bankruptcy. He knew Sienna was doing well for herself and asked her to help him.

"I can't help much, but the "stranger's blind child" may be able to loan you some of his money. He is doing well. The only thing is, I wonder: If he wasn't good enough to be your heir, would your conscience allow you to accept his money?" Sienna asked.

Her dad had no words.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Don't be prideful. Sienna's parents' pride made them consider Luke inferior and unworthy to be their heir. They were later humbled, asking the very same boy for help.
  • Do not despise humble beginnings. Luke came from humble beginnings with the odds stacked against him. However, in the end, he was able to turn lemons into lemonade.
