The singer and actor opened up in the heartfelt post on July 31, 2025, revealing that the illness took a significant toll on both his body and mind throughout his grueling tour schedule. In a lengthy caption, the pop star wrote:

"This has been the most fun, emotional, gratifying, physically demanding, and, at times, grueling experience. Among other things, I've been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease -— which I don’t say so you feel bad for me –– but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes."

The pop star described the illness as "relentlessly debilitating," explaining that his initial reaction to the diagnosis was one of shock. However, he now understood why he was sometimes overwhelmed by nerve pain, fatigue, and sickness while performing.

He said he ultimately faced a difficult decision: stop touring or push through. "I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling," he added. "Not only did I prove my mental tenacity to myself but, I now have so many special moments with all of you that I will never forget [sic]."

Lyme disease, according to the Cleveland Clinic, is a tick-borne illness that can lead to a range of symptoms, including fatigue, fever, joint and body aches, nerve pain, and even paralysis of facial muscles.

While Timberlake's openness has drawn praise from many fans and fellow performers, his stage presence during the tour has already prompted concern and criticism. His onstage performances in Europe have gone viral on TikTok, drawing attention for the wrong reasons.

Stereogum shared a clip of the music star's onstage performance with the caption, "@Justin Timberlake 'performed' in Transylvania for the first time and he sucked [sic]." It has sparked a wave of critical comments.

One viewer responded, "If 'I don't care' was a person. 🫣" Another added, "He [sic] just loitering on stage. 😐" A third noted, "His backing band is literally giving so much more energy." A final commenter asked, "What's wrong with him [sic]"

Similar sentiments were echoed under a separate clip from his performance at Malahide Castle in Dublin. "He was sick or something? He almost didn't sing," one commenter observed. Another joked, "HE'S BRINGING LAZY BACK..........😳😳😳😳," while a third remarked, "This man is tired."

A viral post from a TikToker named @themutesinger shared footage of Timberlake at Electric Castle in Romania, where he appeared to have little energy while standing in the rain. The caption read, "dude took a day off on stage.."

Reactions ranged from concern to outright criticism, with one commenter writing, "This is so so embarrassing he needs to retire," and another asking, "Did he just give up?"

The "Forget Tomorrow" World Tour, Timberlake's first in five years, was announced in January during an appearance on "The Tonight Show" Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Produced by Live Nation, the North American leg of the tour started on April 29 in Vancouver and included 22 cities. The tour supported Timberlake's sixth studio album, "Everything I Thought It Was," and featured his latest single, "Selfish."

Despite the backlash, the singer's fans continue to show support, many now viewing his subdued stage performances in a new light. His vulnerability offers not just context, but connection: a reminder that even seasoned performers carry unseen burdens. By choosing to speak openly, Timberlake hasn't just reclaimed his story; he's extended grace to others facing silent battles of their own.
