A snooty hotel manager loses his temper and evicts the elderly woman seeking shelter from the rain in his lobby, only to regret his actions when karma catches up with him and her son intervenes.

While thick curtains of rain fell from the darkening skies outside, Patricia kept checking her phone for a call from her son.

Adam had requested to meet her at the hotel but had not explained why. She arrived early and sought shelter from the rain in the hotel's lobby. And now Adam wasn't even answering her calls.

Where is this boy? Patricia wondered as she dialed him for the fifth time.

"Hey, honey. This is Mom. I'll be waiting for you at the hotel. Call me when you get the message!" She left him a voicemail, then stuffed the phone in her coat's pocket and looked around.

"This place has definitely changed a lot over the years," she thought, recognizing the luxurious hotel as the place where she had worked three decades ago…

"Excuse me, ma'am, may I help you with something?" a soft voice distracted Patricia's thoughts, and she turned around to see a man dressed in a crisp suit with a name tag on his coat's pocket.

"Thomas, right?" she asked, looking at his name tag.

"Very right, ma'am. So, may I help with something?"

"Oh no," she said gently. "I was supposed to meet my son here, but it started raining, and I had to take shelter here. Sorry. Bad weather."

"So I'm guessing you don't have any bookings here?" he asked.

"Oh, I'm afraid not."

"Well then, you need to leave!" Thomas said, his jaw muscle tight. "This is clearly not a stopover, and we don't let anyone in just like that!"

"But the rain… it's raining cats and dogs, and I have nowhere to go! I'm sure my son will be here soon, Thomas. If you could let me stay here, it would be great. I assure you I won't be causing any disturbance."

"I'm sorry, woman!" Thomas said venomously. "We can't let anyone from the streets walk in and spend as much time in our building as they please without spending a penny! We're a premium hotel, and we are preparing for a festive event! You must leave!"

"But I know this place!" cried Patricia. "I used to work here 35 years ago, and the owner was a kind man. I don't think we ever kicked anyone out like that!"

Karma is like a boomerang; it returns to the person who throws it.

"Well, times change, and people change! You must leave, or I'll be compelled to call security! Out!"

The cruel manager kicked Patricia out in the rain, and she stood there, holding her coat closer to herself, shivering in the chilly gusts that accompanied the rain. Unfortunately, Adam hadn't replied to her message or calls, so she'd have to wait there longer.

Suddenly, a young man approached her and sheltered her under his umbrella. Then he offered her a blanket to cover herself.

"I apologize on behalf of the manager, ma'am," he said. "Thomas is an unkind man. Nothing new there. Sorry about the way he treated you."

"And you are?" asked Patricia, confused by the man's generosity.

The young man introduced himself as Charlie, the porter. He said he had been working with Thomas for three years, and he knew how dishonest and cruel Thomas was.

"He always gets away with it because he's been here for a while and knows his way around things. He is considered the best employee here. Can you believe that?" he told Patricia.

"Well, thank you very much, Charlie. You should head back inside. I don't want to create any more problems for you."

"Oh no, you didn't. I'm glad I could help you. I'll take a leave now. Take care," Charlie said, preparing to leave.

Right then, Adam arrived, and he saw Charlie and Patricia together.

"Mom, what are you doing here?" Adam asked. "Why didn't you wait inside?"

"Oh, I was inside, Adam, but the manager had a problem with it."

"It's cold here, Mom. Let's go in, please!"

Patricia went inside with Adam and told him everything that had happened. Adam was shocked. The event preparations were for none other than Patricia, who was fired from her job years ago for bringing her young son to work.

Patricia had raised Adam alone after her husband's death, and because she couldn't afford a nanny for him back then, she brought Adam to work with her.

Patricia's manager humiliated her in front of the entire staff because she brought her son to work and fired her.

At that moment, Adam had decided he would buy the hotel for his mother one day and welcome her proudly.

Unfortunately, he had left his phone in the office, so he couldn't take Patricia's calls earlier.

"Thomas is the guy's name, right? Call him here right now!" Adam ordered Charlie.

Thomas appeared with a kind facade, as always, but Adam was not going to fall for it.

"Oh, Mr. Farrel! What a pleasure to finally have you here!" he said brightly. "We are almost done with the preparations. You didn't inform us who the special guest for the evening is."

Adam smiled and said, "the woman you kicked out in the rain, Thomas, and so…" He stepped forward, tore off the badge on Thomas's uniform, and handed him a mop and bucket.

"You have two options now: you either take up the job of cleaning the hotel or get the hell out of this place! The woman you disrespected is my mother, and I can't let that slide! This event was supposed to be a surprise for my mom, and I'd been waiting for this moment for so long! You ruined everything, so you deserve this!"

Thomas had never thought his karma would catch up with him, but it did. He had to accept the cleaner's position eventually, while Patricia was proud of her son, who never forgot her sacrifices.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Karma is like a boomerang; it returns to the person who throws it. Thomas thought he'd get away with his rude behavior like he always did, but this time, karma caught up with him.
  • Love and respect your parents and honor their sacrifices. Adam knew how hard it was for Patricia to raise him singlehandedly. He never forgot the sacrifice she made for him and honored it by following through with his promise of buying the hotel.
