Musical superstar Shakira has faced disappointment in long-term commitments on two different occasions. The more recent of the two was with the three-time UEFA Champions League winner, FC Barcelona center-back Gerard Piqué. Their relationship lasted 12 years, and they share parental custody of two children.

Last year, Shakira released a single seemingly addressing their relationship and Pique's alleged infidelity issues. Before her relationship with the athlete, Shakira was with a past Argentinian president's son for almost eleven years.

Shakira Was in a Long-Term Relationship with Antonio de la Rúa, Son of the Former President of Argentina

Shakira is no stranger to commitment. Before her relationship with Gerard, the singer was in a 10-year association with the former president of Argentina's son, Antonio de la Rúa. Shakira began dating Antonio in 2000, and their relationship spanned throughout the 2000s, reaching a tense conclusion in 2010.

They announced their split on January 10, 2011, with a letter on Shakira's official website. Their joint statement read, "Since August 2010, we made a mutual decision to take time apart from our romantic relationship." The letter revealed that their business partnership was not included in the breakup.

Antonio de la Rúa Sued Shakira for $100 Million but Lost the Legal Battle

2012 marked the beginning of a legal conflict between Antonio and Shakira. In November of that year, the Argentinian filed a $250 million lawsuit against the songstress in New York. Shakira's legal response rubbished his claims, saying they were not actionable and that the New York court was out of their jurisdiction.

Antonio filed another lawsuit in 2013, suing the Colombian for $100 million, claiming he built Shakira's brand. He then demanded credit for the success of smash hits "Hips Don't Lie" and "Waka Waka." While these court proceedings were ongoing, Shakira had just welcomed her first child, Milan Piqué Mebarak.

According to the legal documents of their case, Shakira noted she had already been internationally famous when she met Antonio, refuting his claim of being the reason behind her success. However, the star admitted that she had merely appointed him as an advisor simply because he was jobless.

The 2013 lawsuit was the last of three and was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court. The decision made by the judge fell in Shakira's favor, and her ex-boyfriend was not granted the partnership income he sought. The South American exes signed an agreement in 2006 — a prenuptial agreement for unmarried couples.

Shakira released a statement expressing her gratitude for the court's decision to disallow what she considered "groundless lawsuits." Her lawyer revealed that a Swiss court supported the singer's stance with a 15-page "well-reasoned" opinion piece disparaging the plaintiff's file against her.

There Were Reports about Antonio de la Rúa Reconnecting with Shakira after Her Split from Piqué

After the news of Shakira and Gerard's split hit the streets, Antonio was rumored to have reached out to the "Waka Waka" songstress for a possible meeting in Miami. A journalist from Antonio's home country, Juan Etchegoyen, revealed a conversation he had with the past Argentinian president's son, saying:

"There is going to be a reunion with his ex-partner Shakira. I ask him if that news is true and when he read it he never answered me again. He did not block me, which I thank him ... he nailed me, literal, and nail the seen for me that at least says a lot." [sic]

The journalist's statements could have been more conclusive as Antonio did not confirm if the reunion rumors were true. He maintained a healthy relationship with the singer despite their legal feud, and Shakira reportedly planned to attend Antonio's wedding with Daniela. We previously looked at why Shakira and Gerard remained committed without marrying.
