While Retta has not been in public relationships since making a name for herself as a comedian and actress, in 2012, she had Twitter users in stitches when she teased about being in a fake relationship with Joe Manganiello.
The faux online romance began after Manganiello called Retta his "favorite person on Twitter," to which she responded, "...P.S. this totes makes u my boyfriend & I intend to tell errybody I'm [expletive] Alcide (sic)."

Manganiello and Retta's back-and-forth tweets stretched over two years until the news of his relationship with Sofia Vergara broke, to which Retta humorously responded:
"It is with a heavy heart that I learn of Joe Manganiello, aka my wolfy Twitter boo, is seeing one Ms. Sofia Vergara. As with any (pretend) conscious uncoupling, there is still much love, and my Mellow Nello (that was what I called my boo in my head) will always hold a special place in my Twitter heart."
