Elaine Thompson-Herah's Husband Derron Herah Is Also Her Coach
Derron Herah is Elaine Thompson-Herah's husband. The couple tied the knot in November 2019. However, Derron's role in the life of the Olympic champion goes beyond just being her husband.
Elaine Thompson-Herah is regarded as one of the best sprinters in world athletics currently and in the history of the sport. She has made her mark on the sport by winning the 100m and 200m in consecutive Olympics, the first female to do so and second person after Usain Bolt.
Elaine does not do all that work by herself, and one person who has helped her achieve greatness is her husband, Derron, who also works as her coach. The duo has been together for a long time, experiencing all the ups and downs beside each other.
Three Years and Counting
According to her Instagram, Elaine and Derron were joined in holy matrimony on November 2, 2019. Elaine wore a sleeveless trumpet wedding dress on their special day, while Derron wore a navy blue suit and white shirt. The bridesmaids, about six of them, donned peach dresses.
The sprinter and her husband have celebrated their wedding anniversary every year and shared dedication messages for the day on Instagram. In 2020, she praised God for helping them through their first year of marriage, which she noted had some trials. The caption was as much a prayer as it was a note of thanksgiving.
It was almost the same for the second anniversary. She dedicated some sweet words to her husband, saying, "I am still hopelessly in love with you. Please don't stop being wonderful, kind, generous, silly, and romantic."
On their most recent anniversary, they commemorated the day by dressing up and going out for dinner two days after November 2. The couple sat in a private area and, from the pictures, looked set to have a wholesome meal and night. However, the anniversary message on the last one was a brief one.
Derron Herah Keeps His Life Private on Social Media
Derron and Elaine have a mutual passion for track and field athletics. Although he did not reach the same heights as his wife, Derron had quite an adventure as a professional athlete. His choice of events were the 400m and 400m hurdles.
Born in 1982 in Jamaica, Derron had a talent for running from a young age. After impressing in high school, he enrolled at Texas Tech University, where, along with his participation in that athletics program, he also studied for a bachelor's degree in Administration Management. He later went to Davenport University to study finance.
His professional career started in 2001, but he retired a few years later, in 2008. A career of seven years with retirement at 26 is a short-lived career in an industry where many professionals retire past their 30s. Even his wife is considered one of the best sprinters and will turn 31 this year.
His Instagram account is in private mode. However, one can view his bio and his involvement in several business ventures, including the record label Herah Music Productions and The Loan and Pawn Shop.
Derron Is Elaine's Coach Too
When he is not working on his businesses, Derron doubles up as Elaine's coach, a job that sounds very demanding, given that the athlete in question is a five-time Olympic champion. There is no timeline of when exactly Derron began coaching his wife, but that seems to be the case for several years now.
In June 2022, Derron accompanied his star athlete to the National Senior and Junior Championships, where he was disappointed by a delay in starting the proceedings. He regretted this situation, pointing out that if it were the World Championships, where top athletes like Usain Bolt used to participate, that would not happen.
Derron told the Jamaica Observer, "I was honestly just anxious for her to come out of the race healthy after that late start. If an event is supposed to run at 8:40 p.m., you do your warm-up according to that schedule."
However, the coach was confident about Elaine's chances as he noted that she had been training well and could switch on at any time; hence, the delay would not affect her too much.
