Angela Bassett & Oliver Stark’s Emotional Bedside Scene a ‘Gut Punch’ to Viewers in New ‘9-1-1’ Episode
Angela Bassett and Oliver Stark delivered an emotional performance in Season 6, episode 11 of "9-1-1" that left fans distressed. Following the show's success, its cast received a bump in their paycheques, which left Angela Bassett in touching distance of a Hollywood benchmark.
Last week, a preview of Season 6, episode 11 of "9-1-1" was released and showed fan favorite Evan "Buck" Buckley, played by Stark, in critical condition after being struck by lighting.
After the intense episode aired, emotional fans took to Twitter, and one person wrote, "Athena telling Buck Bobby wouldn't survive if he lost him I AM SOBBING ON THE FLOOR."
Another fan typed, "Athena has always been Buck's real mother. Her speech to Buck broke me," and a third shared," When I asked for a buck and Athena scene, this is not what I meant."
Another user shared a clip of Bassett's character sternly urging Stark's character to wake up from his comma, and the user captioned the video, "You heard her, Buck!"
A fifth Twitter user commented, "Athena talking to Buck is such a gut punch because of how much their relationship has grown and how she's his adoptive mother now."
Oliver Stark Was a Little Intimidated Starring Opposite Angela Bassett at First
After joining the cast of "9-1-1," Stark and Bassett's onscreen relationship started on a rocky note. "I think our first scene was us arguing, and nobody wants to argue with Angela Bassett," Stark humorously said. However, after sharing the stage with the iconic actress, his nervousness disappeared, and he shared:
"Because she's not Angela Bassett, she's just Angela Bassett. Like they're great people to work with, and there's no ego involved, so it helped to settle me coming in as the new guy."
After coming on set and viewing himself as a fan, Stark realized that although he was working with actors he grew up watching, he was their colleague, and they were "doing this thing together."

In 2021, before the release of season five of "9-1-1," the series' cast received bonuses, which saw Bassett earning more than $450,000 per episode.
This left Angela Bassett with one of the highest salaries on network television for any actor — male or female — and in touching distance of being the highest-paid actress of color on a broadcast drama series ever.
After a 25% raise, the show's male lead Peter Krause took second place on the list of the show's highest paid, believed to be earning around $300, 000 per episode. Jennifer Love Hewitt, who joined the show in season two, falls third.
