When Murray was a young comedian starting in the industry, he was suicidal. He revealed this fact in a 2014 interview when he said he wasn't a good comedian, and when he left the first show he did, he walked in the wrong direction.
He said the wrong direction of his walking showed him he was going in the wrong direction in his life, too, and he realized he had no desire to stay alive. He headed to Lake Michigan to end his life as he felt "ready to die."
However, on his way, he stopped at the Art Institute of Chicago and felt called to go inside. Inside the institute, he came across a painting from the early 1880s called “The Song of Lark.”

In interviews since, he has said that since the day he saw it, he has always loved that painting. He shared:
"I saw it that day, and I just thought, 'Well, there's a girl who doesn't have a lot of prospects, but the sun is coming up anyway, and she's got another chance at it.’"

Murray decided then and there that he would not take his own life because he could finally acknowledge that each day the sun came up was another chance for him to get it right. Yet, fans are now criticizing him for appearing not to be alive.
