Author Joanne Rowling, best known as JK, has two daughters, Jessica and Mackenzie, and a son, David. Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray is the youngest of the brood and was born in 2005 during an exciting point in the writer's life.

Rowling was about to release the next installment in the magical saga, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." Her father is Rowling's second husband, Neil Murray, and they are still together.

The young girl and her siblings had to deal with their mother's success, which included some scary situations. Recently, Rowling sat for a podcast with Megan Phelps-Roper and revealed:

"I have had direct threats of violence, and I have had people coming to my house where my kids live, and I've had my address posted online. I've had what the police, anyway, would regard as credible threats."

Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray Was Born in January

The youngest of the Rowling clan was born on January 23, 2005, and they announced her birth to the delight of fans, who were waiting to see how Harry Potter and his friends' adventures would continue. She is now 18 years old.

The name Mackenzie is famously Scottish; the author and her husband have houses in Edinburgh and Perthshire. "She is ridiculously beautiful, though I suppose I might be biased," the author wrote on her website back then.

Meanwhile, the existing Mackenzie clan of Scotland was pleased to hear about Rowling's daughter's name, although the couple never said why they chose it. Mackenzie was the author's second child with her second husband, whom she married in 2001 in a secret ceremony in her Scottish mansion.

Rowling and Murray had welcomed their son, David, around two years before their daughter's birth. Rowling's eldest child, Jessica, was from her previous marriage to Jorge Arantes.

In 2005, aside from waiting for the release of the sixth installment in the "Harry Potter" series, Rowling was also busy with the premiere of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," where Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Matthew Lewis' characters faced their fourth year at Hogwarts.

During her pregnancy, Rowling decided to visit her old house, where she lived a different life only a decade before Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray was born. Back then, welfare checks were her only income.

In a 2005 interview with NBC's Katie Couric, the author explained why she returned to her previous home, where she made history by writing one of the most successful children's books. She explained:

"Last year, when I was pregnant with Mackenzie, Neil and I were on the other side of Edinburgh. And we were very near the flat in which I finished writing 'Philosopher’s Stone.' I hadn't been back there since I had left it and moved to a new house. And I said to Neil, 'Let's go around the corner, this is where I used to live.'"

The author said she cried at the sight of the apartment as it brought back memories of her struggle. "And I think it hit me so hard how life had changed. And in all respects, how wonderful it was," Rowling added.

She remembered how hard she worked on writing that first novel and how she told herself to keep going. The author only gave a few select interviews because of her brand-new baby.

Rowling also expressed how her writing improved after having two more children. "I think that emotionally, I've probably felt a little bit more balanced when I started writing again," she told Couric.

When the journalist suggested that her kids made her more creative, Rowling said, "Well, I was also pregnant while writing 'Philosopher’s Stone' so actually half of my novelistic output has been done while pregnant, so."

Couric joked that she should keep having babies, but the author said they were done after Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray.

Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray Lives a Private Life for a Reason

Despite their mother's incredible fame, all her kids remain out of the spotlight. It might be due to the scary situations and violent threats which have increased after Rowling expressed her opinions on certain political and social issues.

Being a mother will always come first for her. She had to work and dedicate time to her "Harry Potter" fans, but the family was her priority. In an interview with J.J. Marsh, the author was asked how she made time for her creative pursuits. Rowling said:

"You have to be highly disciplined. In her stunning biography of Colette, Secrets of the Flesh, Judith Thurman wrote that mothering and writing 'are, at times, conflicting vocations' – very true."

Her kids come before anything, but Rowling might not answer calls, emails, or the door when she's working. She forgets house chores; fortunately, her good friends and husband understand.

Unfortunately, not everything is magical, and her children have been kept from the limelight and red carpets because Jessica, her first daughter, was "targeted." A journalist slipped a letter in Jessica's backpack in her first year of primary school.

Rowling "felt a sense of invasion" of her privacy, which made her angry. Therefore, she kept her other two kids away, and Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray doesn't have a social media account.

Mackenzie's Siblings Are Rarely in the News

In 2021, the Daily Mail revealed that Jessica had gotten engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Ronny Dias, but that was the last time anyone heard any reports of Rowling's children. Any details of her wedding remained private.

None of Mackenzie's siblings appear to have social media either, and her mother respects their privacy too. She only referred to David in a tweet about a cup he gave her, featuring an owl and some explicit language.

Despite her fame and fortune, Rowling and her husband decided to raise the kids as normally as possible. It has benefited them because they are all adults and have chosen to remain away from everything. They know how to protect themselves from negative public attention.
